All I know about the Manning Court Demolitions is what I read in the paper. I'm pursuing my masters in Historic Preservation at EMU, and I've interned with Kalamazoo's Historic Preservation Coordinator, as well as sat in on Kalamazoo's Historic District Commission meetings. I am a resident of Genesee County and my parents both work in Flint.

I'm not a member of the Flint Historic District Commission, although I would like to be.

That said, here is what I think, for whatever it is worth.

The Flint Institute of Music's main concern is for parents to be able to see their children when they drop them off, correct? So why do they need an entire parking lot? Wouldn't a large turnaround near the building solve that problem?

After going to school in Kalamazoo and seeing the success of their city, I view Flint almost as an historical wasteland. How many buildings were torn down for Waterstreet Pavilion? What about the IMA? I was too young at the time to understand the particulars of those decisions, but even at the age of 10, I was still angry.

And the Flint Institute of Music lost their OWN historic building to fire in the 1970s, and that also was a Dort Building, built by Walter Manning, for whom Manning Court was named. Don't you think saving the Manning Court homes would be a nice way to honor the past FIM building and builder that was lost?

And what of other historic homes lost? Charles Mott's home on Kearsley Street was demolished for UM-Flint. The Oren Stone House/YWCA and First and Harrison was a beautiful building that was also torn down for a parking lot in the 1970s. Not to mention our own Carnegie Library that was demolished, but at least the pillars were saved.

People look at the photos of historic buildings demolished in the 1960s-1980s for parking lots and failed modern businesses and think, "Wow, how could they have been so blind?"

It is sad that in 2006, in the age of tax credits and cool cities and "Save America's Treasures" that I would be asking the same thing about Flint.

tegan,
i surmised the same thing. The problem as stated by the FIM [security for kids being dropped off in sight of their parents] does not align with the proposed solution. A parking lot. If parents are dropping their kidsoff, they don't need a parking lot...they need a safe and convenient loading/unloading zone.

therefore the parking lot is just a red herring....

clearly the cultural center wants to get out from owning these homes, without losing the rights/control of the land they sit on.

In their eyes, its probably more trouble in time/energy etc being the landlords of rental properties....they probably don't see themselves in that business, nor the $$.

They already said they'd be happy for people to move the homes. So they clearly want to retain the property, otherwise they'd be willing to sell the homes withthe land.

The parking lot is just the excuse to demolish the homes and retain the property. paving over it, is the cheapest way to maintain the property without creating more maintenance expense or an eyesore.

Its all a big scam. The cultural people probably figured out not too many people would notice.

I didn't find out about the protest until the day of. Or day after. I'm new here, so I'm catching up. Maybe there already is, but I think there should be flyers posted in places around the city. I don't know where UM-Flint stands on the issue, but maybe spread awareness with the students, or ask some professors to spread the word to their classes.

I also don't know where Flint Club stands on the issue, but I know they are working in the old Capital Theater and they are advocates of preservation. If we can get some big group names behind this, it might spread the word and maybe raise some funds to do something.

Maybe I'm being too vague.

Dayne Walling's Flint Club didn't get involved cause he is running for Mayor.
So now he is sitting on the side line of this issue. Notice he never spoke out about it, and was a no show, no call at the meeting.

So in turn Flint Club p.a.c. will not even talk about this, they get lots of money from Mott Foundation and other local entities.

To the administrator,

This John guest, who keeps commenting on this issue, is possibly a commissioner, or someone "affiliated" with the Mayor's office, Jerry Preston, the cultural center or FIM.

I mention Preston because he's tight with the anti-HDC mayor and is also responsible for getting Soumela on the commission.

P.S. This is the only post I will make in this name.

P.P.S. I WAS the voice of Reason B4 someone used the same name in order to taint my remarks with their own "non-voice of reason" type remarks.

P.P.S., I will also no longer refer to this name or my previous V.O.R. name.

Smelz/VOR,

you do know that "John" is pressing for you to contact him on other threads. Apparently seeking more information, he believes you have and apparently he believes in the quality/veracity of your info.

but clear me up on something. You suggest this person, John, may be affiliated with the mayor's administration.

yet the tenor of John's post, basically accusing Eashoo of being an agent of the mayor, is decidely anti-mayoral.

So how do you rationalize the anti-mayoral content with a poster who is working for the mayor? red herring? By whom?

Biggie, the person to whom you sent your last reply has said, on another thread under a different name, that he will not post again today.

But, as it seems as if I know him/her, let me say...

Mayor wants HDC gone... any discredited commissioner is a good commissioner, to him. No one said Ryan isnt being used as a dupe. Also, Preston is tight with the mayor, he's with the Flint Area Visitors and Conventions Bureau.

Red Herring to push for what mayor wants? Maybe...
Red Herring to make VOR sound kookie? Maybe...

Or, does he want me to remove my mask... to show the world the hiddeous creature I've become?
Seriously, to find out who I am or what all I know? Maybe...

Really, your guess is as good as mine.

P.S., I will not post again under this name. I will not post again today, and if it wasnt for Biggie I would have kept my word.
But, seriously, I will not post again today, nor respond today....

Sounds to me the real good people on the Historic District Commission are Heddy,Suomela,Rutherford and Smith. The other 3 don't know their ass from a hole in the wall. Josh Freeman stated how to remove commissioners, I think we should press the Mayor and City Council to remove them.

Wow. I'm a little confused. Lots of name-dropping and BS. Maybe that is the whole point. People on the outside are made to believe that people on the inside are evil or just puppets of someone else, and no one is being truthful, and while everyone is arguing about who said what and who is working for who, nothing is getting done at all.

For a moment, reading all the arguing, I felt like... why even bother? But especially in the city of Flint, if people continue to stop fighting for even tiny battles because of the bull, then we'll arrive at a very scary place.

Maybe that is what makes people so disturbed about the demolition in the first place. It's not the houses themselves, (they are relatively unimportant) but that something doesn't seem quite right in the decision making process.

I shouldn't be made to feel that if I use my real name on here and speak my mind, that the mayor or anyone else in office will come after me, same as I shouldn't be made to feel that if I agree with the mayor on any issue that other people will come after me. Because if that did happen, or I did feel that way, I'd just move out of the city or the county. At this point in my life, education, and career, I really feel that I don't need Flint as much as Flint needs me. I think that this is how a lot of the graduating college and high school kids feel, and if effort isn't made, we'll just leave...

And we won't be buying our cars here either.

Sorry. That was a rant. I figured, everyone else was doing it, why not join in.
