At the last Ethics Committee meeting the chair John Daly asked Eric Mays to leave the room if he was to continue his loud conversations .
Once again Mays voiced his belief how this committee and the Ombudsman position were put in place to target him.
It seems that the previous meeting was an informational meeting with the FBI on how to detect possible municipal corruption. The agent used the Detroit Mayor Kwayme Kilpatrick corruption case and the cases of Councilwoman Monica Conyers, her Chief of Staff Sam Riddle and State Rep. Mary Waters bribery cases as examples.
Mays walked into the FBI presentation and saw a photo of Riddle and reacted. Riddle is a controversial activist, political and media consultant and works with the National Action Network in Detroit.Mays and Riddle have both posted photos of the two of them together in Detroit and Flint.
Riddle was a logical example as he and Conyers were indicted for extorting money, sometimes over $20,000, from individuals wanting to do business with the city or who wanted approvals for strip clubs, restaurants, pawn shops, and tech companies. They were also involved in he Synagro sludge treatment contract and the investments of the Detroit general retirement system. The two were said to have teamed up to exort at least $65,000.
Also Riddle and former state rep. Mary Waters were indicted and charged with bribing Councilman Lattimore with $12,500 to support the relocation of Southfield Pawn Shop.
Riddle pleaded guilty to bribery and was sentenced to 37 months in prison.
Barbara McQuade, the US Attorney in the case had this to say about Riddle: "This type of corruption erodes public confidence and undermines the strength of or democracy."
The question now is why is Mays so seemingly paranoid about being a potential target? He does have experience as a lobbyist, primarily to Arab Party Store owners. This activity and his threatening manner led to two non-domestic personal protection orders against him. |
