In an impassioned press conference this morning, the mayor highlighted both his accomplishments and the source of his greatest frustration, the Flint City Council.
The mayor kicked off his one year review in office with some pretty tough words.
Calling on an aide to pass him a broom as a prop, the mayor said he would continue to sweep the city clean to help rid Flint of corruption that he said has, "Sucked the financial health and strength from the place we make our home."
Later in the press conference, he made reference to several City Council members who, he says he continues to investigate.
Williamson made vague references to people in City Hall for defrauding the city of millions in HUD kickbacks.
He also highlighted what he saw as his accomplishments, including trash pickup, demolishing 90 houses, paving 65 miles of city streets and putting the city in a positive financial position. "As of 20 minutes ago, in the banks, unencumbered, we had $61,850,000. When I took office a year ago, we had $44 million," the mayor told the audience at City Hall.
The ten people who work in the mayor's office will not be laid-off as we were earlier told. Apparently, the mayor has found money in other department budgets to keep them.
His assistant, Joe Conroy, not only will be kept on, but has been made manager of the city's Finance Department.
The mayor's office and City Council are back in court today, fighting over the question of transferring the city's HUD administrative authority to the county.
The mayor has also announced a $3,000 reward to anyone who helps police find the assault weapon used in several recent homicides.
