The City Council gave preliminary approval Monday for a trio of ordinances that could reopen the door for removing Mayor Don Williamson from office - although similar emergency ordinances have already been declared illegal and unenforceable by the city attorney.
The proposals make mayors subject to removal by the council if they use the office for personal gain, don't follow the proper channels of government structure, and violate public interest ordinances.
Public hearings on the measures are expected to be held at the council's Aug. 8 meeting.
Last month, the council voted against Williamson's removal after a large group of residents showed up at a public hearing and called the charges trumped up and political.
