A Mt. Morris Township fire that killed one woman is now being investigated as a homicide. Flames broke out at West Wood Manor Apartments on Clio Street Friday morning.
State Police Fire Investigator Kathy Taylor says evidence points to the fire being deliberately set. An accelerant was found on the first two floors. The third floor was too badly burned for fire officials to determine if an accelerant was used there too. Officials say the fire started in the stairwell between the first and second floors.
The apartment fire killed one woman, Kokona Vaughn. She and her 5-year-old daughter were trapped on the third floor. Neighbors grabbed a mattress and tried to persuade Vaughn to jump. Vaughn didn't jump, but did get her daughter out. The girl was rushed to a Detroit hospital in critical condition. Vaughn was taken to a local hospital where she died. An autopsy on Vaughn is scheduled for Saturday.
The state police is offering up to a $5000 reward. Anyone with information is urged to call the State Police Flint Post at 810-732-1111.
