Eight Democratic governors — including Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm — have sent a letter to President Bush and congressional leaders calling for an investigation into possible gas gouging in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. They also demand that any ill-gotten profits be refunded to customers.
The letter cites a study by a University of Wisconsin economist that says the hurricane isn't fully to blame for high gas prices. It also estimates that for gas prices to reach $3 a gallon, the price of crude oil would have to run about $95 a barrel. Crude has been around $65 a barrel.
A White House spokesman says no one has seen the letter yet, but Bush has asked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to handle any such allegations.
