The city finally has a permanent fire chief.
The City Council voted 8-1 Wednesday to hire Richard Dicks Sr. to the post after he served in the interim job for more than a year. He'll make $89,600 a year.
The previous council and Mayor Don Williamson fought over whether Dicks should be the permanent choice, with the council filing a lawsuit and later voting to reject Dicks for the permanent job in July.
Ninth Ward Councilman Scott Kincaid, a past opponent who this time voted for the appointment, said he backed Dicks, a city pensioner, because the mayor proposed hiring him under a contract in which he wouldn't be eligible for medical and other fringe benefits.
The lone dissenter was 5th Ward Councilwoman Carolyn Sims.
