UM-Flint tuition to increase 6.4 percent this fall

ANN ARBOR -- The University of Michigan-Flint will raise tuition by 6.4 percent this fall, a sizable hit for some students but the lowest hike in at least three years.
It's also the second lowest among increases at 10 fellow state colleges so far.
The UM Board of Regents unanimously approved the increase today at a meeting in Ann Arbor.
"We recognize that in Genesee County, families are very hard hit, and we wanted to do everything possible to keep tuition as low as we could," Acting Chancellor Jack Kay said today.
"I think there will be a number of people who will be disappointed that tuition will be raised, but I think they will understand when they see what other universities did across the state that we are exercising as much restraint as possible."
Despite angst among local administrators who have grimaced over state cuts, UM-Flint's tuition boost for full-time undergraduate student is a far cry from an 11.9 percent raise two years ago and less than last year's 7.9 percent jump.
While approving the UM-Flint increase, the university's regents also set UM-Ann Arbor's tuition, up 7.4 percent, and UM-Dearborn's price at a 7.9 percent increase.
The corresponding tuition increase for in-state, graduate students at UM-Flint will be 5 percent.
Next year's budget also calls for a 3 percent merit salary increase for faculty and staff, which Kay said was "modest."
