Activist Eric Mays launched a recall attempt Wednesday against Council President Darryl Buchanan, accusing him of failing to represent citizens and, instead, serving the mayor.
Buchanan is "covering up" unlawful acts by Mayor Don Williamson, which include establishing a vehicle "wrecking operation" at the Oak Business Center and failing to appoint a police chief, according to the recall attempt filed with the Genesee County Election Commission. Gary Hagler was named interim police chief in July 2004, but Williamson has not removed the interim label.
Mays charges that Buchanan also is to blame for the mayor costing the city $1.4 million in unspent federal block grant funds last fall.
"This guy ain't paying attention to us," Mays said. "He's too busy running with the mayor."
The recall effort comes two months after another activist, Quincy Murphy, started a recall attempt against Williamson. That attempt is pending.
The election commission is expected to decide June 1 whether to approve Mays' recall language. If approved, Mays would have 180 days to collect 762 signatures from the city's 1st Ward residents supporting a recall vote.
Buchanan labeled the accusations "totally erroneous and false."
The wrecking operation Mays refers to is the city's impound lot, where impounded cars, some extensively damaged, are stored until they can be auctioned by the city.
Buchanan said the city is allowed to appoint an interim police chief. Buchanan also said he is not to blame for the city losing federal funds, which preceded his council presidency.
