Joe Wilson said he worried about the mayor when he saw him outside in near-zero degree temperatures, wearing a light jacket and no hat.
The next day, on Thursday, Mayor Don Williamson was admitted to McLaren Regional Medical Center, being treated for flu-like symptoms. It was his second trip to McLaren for flu-like symptoms this month.
Williamson, 73, on Wednesday was helping a Tacoma Street resident after a tree fell on the house.
Wilson, a mayoral adviser and friend, said Williamson was there for a few hours, and he believes it hurt the mayor's health because he never completely got over his illness last time.
Wilson said he talked to Williamson in the hospital and the mayor was in good spirits.
"He kept asking me, 'What are you doing? What problems are you working on?' He's all business," Wilson said, laughing.
Wilson said he believes the mayor will be out of the hospital in a few days.
"It's nothing real serious," Wilson said. "His lungs started clogging up again."
Wilson said about three weeks ago, the mayor quit smoking, and he believes Williamson's respiratory problems led to the mayor putting down the cigars.
Wilson said he tried to get Williamson to go to Florida for a few weeks, but the mayor wouldn't go.
"He doesn't take many vacations," Wilson said.
Councilman Ehren Gonzales said even if Williamson would just take some days off, it might help.
"When most people would be resting for a while after getting sick like that, he gets back to work," Gonzales said. "He needs to relax."
Williamson was in the hospital for four days in mid-January, where he also passed a kidney stone. |

What time did this happen? Maybe that's why there weren't any layoffs today? I bet he is itching to get out of that hospital. There are people that need to be fired and Buchanan can't do it himself! |

If I had to put up with people in this city on a daily basis I would be sick too. |

I saw on the news he probably became ill after standing out in the cold supervising tax payer paid city workers during the removal of a fallen tree from private property. Now thats a deal for the guy with the downed tree. You got a tree that needs removed call da mayor let the city pay for it. One more addition to Flints resume. |

Yup thats where I saw it also and of course ya know CH 12 is always accurate. I couldnt care less how Flints Mayor uses or misuses its employees but I am surprised no one from Flint picked up on this the day it was reported. Might be interesting if someone checked to see the homeowners relationship with the Mayor or is this going to be standard practice for the city. |

The 73-year-old mayor goes out in the middle of the night to check on damage caused by a tree falling on the home of a resident. And you complain? Be glad it wasn't your home. If --I say IF-- the tree was on city property it's city liability. He may have gone out to see if that was the case. This city is full of dead trees that could fall and injure people and property. That the mayor called someone (city employee or private business) to take care of the problem should be commended. If the tree was on private property, yes the homeowner's insurance should cover reimbursement for the expense of cleanup and repair.
I'd say it was above and beyond the call of duty for the mayor to do what he did, and the homeowner must certainly be grateful. |
