FLINT, MICHIGAN -- Joe Conroy, a close adviser to Mayor Don Williamson, has resigned.
Conroy, 73, governmental operations director, resigned today and told The Flint Journal that it's time to retire.
"I've been at it for 4 1/2 years, and that was enough," said Conroy, who joined Williamson's staff shortly after Williamson was elected in 2003.
Conroy said he's proud of the progress Flint has made since he started, when the city was under an emergency financial takeover.
Conroy, a former state senator and state representative, lobbied politicians in Lansing and Washington, D.C. for money. He most recently represented Flint in Washington in an attempt to get a casino in the city.
Conroy said downtown is coming back, and he was glad to help investors come in and build new buildings and renovate existing buildings downtown.
"I think downtown is going to start to blossom," Conroy said.
Williamson couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
"I feel good about participating. It was a challenging job," Conroy said.
