For the fiscal year ended 9/30/07, excise taxes on tobacco products generated $1,129,226,000 in revenue for the State coffers.

At $2.00 per pack, that equates to about 564,613,000 packs of smokes. At roughly $5.00 per pack, that generates an additional $169,383,900 in sales tax receipts.
Smokers generate almost $1.3 BILLION in taxes just in Michigan.
By way of comparison, the Michigan Lottery (another voluntary tax, this one on people who are bad at math) generated just under $750 million for the same year.

Another sin tax, on beer, wine & liquor, generates less than $160 million per year.
Motor vehicle registration fees? Less than $875 million.
(Note also that these figures do not include the windfall from tobacco company settlements.)
As a former smoker (I quit only because I couldn't stand DONATING my hard earned dollars to the government), I think it's time we recognized these people for the generous souls that they are and quit treating them as social outcasts. |
