The Park People has benefited citizens throughout Houston and Harris County with its aggressive campaigns for the development of Parks. Its strategies include public education and information through newsletter, workshops, seminars and public forums; and consistent lobbying at local, state, and national levels for more and better parks.
Besides this, some other achievements of the Park People in the recent years are:
· The organization conducted a ‘On the trail of trash’ campaign in association with Houston Parks and Recreation dept. and Keep Houston Beautiful.
· The Park People teamed up with students from Austin High School in Houston’s East part of town and the Texas Cooperative Extension Service, in February 11, 2006, to plant 600 plants of cord grass (spartina patens) as part of the restoration process of the Mason Park Wetlands.
· Tony Marron Park is a $2 million park renovation project of The Park People which was completed on November 13, 2005. The 19-acre park site has included in the renovation, soccer fields for both adults and children, open green space with a grove of trees and shrubs planted to attract wildlife, walking trails throughout, a bike trail along Buffalo Bayou, a children’s play area etc.
· On April 29, 2005, the 116th Arbor Day Observance for the State of Texas, the Arbor Day Tree was dedicated to Executive Director Emeritus of Park People Inc., Glenda Barrett, in honor of her many years of supporting trees and green space for the citizen’s of Houston.
Park People is supported by a number of Corporations such as Exxonmobil, Bracewell & Giuliani, Amegy Bank, AT&T etc, Foundations such as Houston Endowment, Inc., Susan Vaughan Foundation etc., people like Terry Hershey, Elkins Family, Meg and Dick Weekley , Susan Garwood and George Peterkin etc.
