I would hope that everyone that reads this takes some time to reflect on what a really, really, great country this is.
Sure, we won't ever agree in totality.
The important part is that we have the right to do just that.
I wish for all of you to have a great time this weekend.
Whoop it up, eat, drink (iced tea of course) yourselves into oblivion, hug your kids, call your parents over, see your friends, pet your dog and cat.
Put you hand over your heart and say..........
I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag, of the United States of America.
And to the Republic for which it stands,
One nation, Under God.
With Liberty and Justice for All.
Best to all and one more Happy Independence Day! |

I honestly don't know what a great country this is.
Is it better than some dictatorship or Sharia ruled country? Yes.
Is it as good as other Westernized, capitalist countries? I'm not so sure.
I think it's important to contemplate these things.
I would say the pledge, but I refuse that bit about "under God". It was much better without it. |

If this country is so bad, why are so many trying to get into it?
We may be "great", but we're a heck of a lot better than most countries. |

Why are people TRYING TO GET IN?
Because of those countries I listed that are worse: dictatorships and Sharia law. But most of all, people see economic opportunity. I don't blame them for that. They just don't know all the drawbacks yet of being another prole in the machine.
There are plenty of people trying to get into Spain too.
And what's that supposed to mean, twotap? I'm crazy, am I? |

I'll say the pledge, but I think that its stupid for some schools and organizations to try to force people to say it. Forcing somebody to pledge allegiance to a flag which represents freedom is stupid. Come to think of it, pledging allegiance to a flag, rather than the qualities and freedoms it represents, is lunacy.
When I was on the city council, we would recite it, and the Mayor would usually call on me to lead it. When I got to the last line, I would mumble "...with liberty and justice for
some
".
Its a good thing I had to resign when I got a new job. There's no way in hell I would have been re-elected! |

You sure you don't want to move to Flint and run for something here?
You make too much sense. Maybe not. |

Having said all that though, I do believe that this is the greatest country, in spite of those who would sell out what makes us great in order to buy some temporary illusion of security.
Who was it that said that "Democracy is the worst form of government in the world....except for all of the other systems".
Churchill, I think. |
