At the Council meeting tonight it was brought up that these Ward Captains that the Mayor appointed now have City paid telephones and cameras in their homes. They are also issuing tickets on behalf of the City. Anyone else find this odd?

Extremely odd, Josh. I doubt anyone volunteering as a "Ward Captain" would not already have a home telephone, and I see no need for a camera in their home. Certainly our "Ward Captain" has her own phone, and she has no need for a camera. I've heard the "ticket" allegation before, and I have my doubts about that as well.

Someone went to the home of one of our local volunteers complaining they had received a "ticket" issued by that volunteer. It was utterly false, our volunteers don't issue tickets. I wonder if this is what the person you heard is talking about, and who may be behind the false "tickets" issued in someone else's name.

Legislation JUST passed the House and the Senate in Michigan stating that volunteers that are with the Police Department can write tickets now, mostly aimed at parking offenses in handicapped spaces though from what I can fathom.....

I believe that they are writing tickets. I;ve talked with folks at the City and they have the tickets that the Captains are using.

If the tickets are for blight related offenses, more power to them. I'd like to see the land bank ticketed for unsecured houses that are a public nuisance.

This... is... awesome!!!! I can't wait to get ticketed by a volunteer for my saggy bottoms. Have I mentioned that I love this town?

I'm so excited. I'm going for a walk.

How do I figure out where my local volunteer lives? I'd like to personally deliver a cake and welcome their help to da 'hood.

It would be VERY easy to contest a ticket given by a volunteer.....there has to be something specified in WRITING somewhere about the authority that the volunteers with the Police Department possess.

I know this for a bloomin' fact. The police officers' union construes this as giving their jobs away......hmmm. Go figure.

The city, if they were in their right mind, would NOT advocate volunteers getting or even give the notion to give volunteers ticket writing powers....equates to confrontations which could equate to BIG lawsuits....oy.

Personally MD? I join the saggy pants brigade with you.......if a volunteer were to hand out tickets for this, but the saggy pants issue is to give the police more power to search them not volunteers since they don't have the authority to arrest....oy.

edited for clarification

Ah, well. A girl can dream.

The police don't care about arresting me for my saggy drawers, anyway, Andi. You see, I'm a white lady. Which apparently makes my crack harmless. Sad

Don't worry, ladies. There's talk of going after extremely short skirts, shorts, & very low cut tops. Volunteers are needed to watch for these violations and report them .......... eventually. Laughing

We should have a protest in front of the Police Department with our saggy pants. Maybe we could get a mass arrest.

Levi's stock would go up, belt sales would be up, sales of pitchforks and torches (citronella kind, of course) would be up, more police officers would have to be added for security. We CAN make Flint a better place!!!! Wink

Sounds like a plan!!!!!
