I can remember watching the political conventions with my parents back in 52 & 56. Open debate about the platform, then a vote. Many speeches endorsing different candidates. Roll call vote after roll call vote until the presidential and vice presidential candidates were chosen. The conventions meant something.
Today, the platform is done before the convention, and the candidates are already selected. Other than to be seen amongst the glitterati, schmooze, and grab all the freebies, what's the purpose?

Here's a pretty good (short) article from Slate in 2000 about the history of political conventions, and why they aren't the exciting events we fondly remember.

According to the article, conventions with lots of drama make for exciting TV, but they also tend to pick losing candidates.

Today's conventions are designed to unite the party for the upcoming election. Even without TV, they'd be pretty much the same.

Andi, if you believe that, you absolutely do not want to read this article.
