(TV5) Flint--When you see a car that has a police emblem on the side of it you would expect that there is an officer of the law behind the wheel. But in Flint that might not be the case.
Flint Mayor Don Williamson has had police logos put on his personal car. The mayor says that he turned his Buick into a "police" car as a show of support for the Flint Police Department and to show the community that he is out there.
"What I want to do is make the people feel comfortable and trust our police department, I think I can do that, I want them to know we are their friends out there," Williamson said.
TV5 has learned that there is nothing illegal about him having a police logo on his car, as long as he doesn't try to act like a police officer. In other words he can't go around arresting people.
Many people TV5 spoke with say they really don't mind, but some say it's not something they want to see their mayor doing.
"I think it's inappropriate. He's not a police officer he shouldn't be driving it, if it stipulates police on it people think it's a police vehicle," said Terry George, a Flint resident.
While the car has a police logo, it is not equipped with lights or sirens. Mayor Williamson adds this is just a small part of his plan to combat crime in the city.
"I'm doing everything in my power to make sure that the city settles down. We will work together to eliminate the crime and friction in the city," Williamson said.
