There was a meeting at Haskell yesterday at 6 organized by Lynne Waybright, candidate for the 5th ward council seat. Mr. Walling & Chief Lock were scheduled to attend. This was set up a month ago, and on Friday afternoon the mayor's office confirmed their attendance. It didn't happen. I know the mayor was in Washington, but his office could have at least let the meeting organizers know on Friday that he would be unable to attend. Chief Lock didn't bother to show up. They both could have sent representatives, but I guess that was too much trouble.
The meeting was attended by about 30 citizens, who voiced their frustration at being blown off by the administration. It was still a good meeting, however. Everyone present talked about their concerns about crime in the city & what could be done to reduce it.
Mrs. Waybright announced that there will be a crime prevention conference on Saturday, Oct. 17. It will be held at the Joy Tabernacle Church at the corner of Chevrolet Ave. and Dayton St. from 1 to 5. The speaker is Henry Reyna, a retired Saginaw police officer and crime prevention specialist. Light refreshments will be served. This conference is sponsored by the M=National Block Club Coalition, Joy Tabernacle Church, and Block By Block Revitalization. There is no charge, and all are welcome.

The vast majority of her supporters are black.
I haven't seen any endorsement of Lawler by the mayor.
What, exactly, has Lawler done for the people of the 5th ward?
Whatever happened to Dr. King's dream?

It's Mrs. Lynne.
Does the amount of money a candidate can collect determine who gets elected? Getting money from someone can obligate a person to follow the donor's agenda. Lynne's only agenda is making the 5th ward a safe, clean place to live. That's why she has cleaned up over 80 lots & abandoned houses in the 5th ward. Drive past the Hispanic Center on Lewis St. and look at the lots around it. She, her husband, and her 3 sons cleaned them up. That's why she is sponsoring the crime prevention program on Oct. 17.

She holds monthly meetings for 5th ward residents to hear their concerns and issues, and she does what she can to help them. Has Lawler EVER done anything similar? He showed up at one of her meetings with Raynetta Speed, who demanded that he be allowed to speak, which he was allowed to do. He was very poorly received by the people present. Also, Raynetta stated she represents the land bank 24/7. Working for a government entity and publicly endorsing a political candidate is a clear violastion of the Hatch Act.

I got Lawler's literature; it's poorly written. The accomplishments he listed, like the Northeast Village Citizen's District Council & the Northeast Village Business Association are in the 3RD WARD! A picture of him standing beside a garbage truck does not mean he actually cleaned up anything. He claims that he lives in University Park, but the people we know that live there say they know nothing about him.

Just who's pocket is Lawler in? If he owes favors to different people or groups, how can he represent the people?

The mayor will be asked to verify this statement.

It has probably been more than a year since I last posted on Flint Talk. I usually just sit back and watch the fireworks. But I could not ignore this blatant display of ignorance.

Lakewoman50 should move to Flint and live with these people to find out what they believe. Most of the people I have talked to say they are sick and tired of everything being made into a racial issue. These are black people, white people and Hispanic people. Just because I was raised in a different culture than my black, white, Hispanic or other brothers and sisters, does not mean we can't get along. I personally enjoy learning from people from different cultures. When you get down to it, most people are just trying to scratch out a living, support their family and pay their bills and hopefully have enough left over to enjoy life a little.

Lakewoman50, you wrote “Lynne who?” Apparently you know who because you said she was a white woman. Go walk around in the 5th Ward and most people do not know Bernard Lawler.

I did a little research on these candidates. It seems that Mr. Lawler has done things in the 3rd Ward, but has shown no interest in the 5th Ward until he wanted people’s vote. Even since starting to run, the only thing I could find that he did for the 5th ward is an event that he had at Cook School. The problem is that it was done illegally! According to the School District, there was to be no connection to the political campaign. Yet his flyers said “This event is being sponsored by: The Committee to Elect Bernard Lawler, 5th Ward City Council”. There are also pictures of his campaign signs plastered all around the school. He even parked a large travel unit in the school yard with campaign signs all over it.

What I found on Lynne Waybright is that she has been working in the 5th Ward for the last several years. The people that I have talked to that have met her are strong supporters. The common thread among people that I talked to is that Mrs. Waybright is there for them at all hours, she always calls back, she gets things done, that she is the only one that actually goes out and cleans up the neighborhood. I have seen empty lot and vacant houses that she has cleaned. Many of them are cleaner that houses that people live in. She obviously is willing to work hard and literally get her hands dirty for the community.

I guess a true statement of her work in the community is that in 2008, Mrs. Waybright was awarded the “Art of Community” award by Salem Housing. Salem Housing said that this award is given annually to an individual who has done exceptional work to revitalize Flint. Just last month, the City of Flint Human Relations Commission gave out its annual awards. Among those listings, I found Mrs. Waybright name for winning “Volunteer of the Year”. In the City’s handout, reference was make to Mrs. Waybright’s excellent organization skill and her work to help everybody in the community. It also said that she has cleaned between 80-100 lots. It talks about her having informational meetings to keep residents informed of issues and events. She puts out a newsletter had clothing and household giveaways. And what do you know the award was presented to her by Dayne Walling.

It sounds to me like Mr. Lawler showed up just for votes and Mrs. Waybright has been on the job for years. I guess it comes down to voting for somebody who talks or somebody takes action. I know who I would pick. You make up your own mind. I wish I had that clear cut of a choice in my ward.
