Flint police layoff notices were a mistake and have been rescinded, city official says

FLINT, Michigan — Seven police layoff notices that were sent out this week were a mistake and have been rescinded, the mayor's spokeswoman said today.

"It was due to a miscommunication," Communications Director Dawn Jones said. "The city of Flint continues in negotiations with the public safety unions in hopes of reaching an agreement that will avert any layoffs of public safety employees."

The layoff notices were sent to police union officials from the city's human relations department.

One captain, two lieutenants, two sergeants and two officers were named in the notice. The cuts would have been effective Feb. 16.

Jones said she didn't have any information on how the mistake was made.

As of 2 p.m., police Sgt. Rick Hetherington said he had not been notified that the layoffs were rescinded.

"If it was a mistake, that's a fairly in-depth mistake," he said.

Jones said the city is continuing to work on budget cuts to close a projected $8-million deficit.

Some city employees have been notified that an involuntary layoff day could take place Friday if an agreement about 12 voluntary unpaid days off isn't reached.

Union official Keith Speers told tv 12 he did not believe it was a mistake.
Raul Garcia said last week on tv that the city wanted a 22% cut in the dept. and he expects to lose one fire station and up to 8 officers. Could this layoff scare be more of a scare tactic?

Meanwhile Walling is keeping Roda matthews although she is in an unbudgeted position. He wants to write a grant to keep her, but can that pay for her salary and benefits already expended? According to council Wallings secretary has too high of a salary. Her salary combined with Wallings is $7k over the line item for that item.

Look for fireworks at council tonight!

Scenario: Guess, what? You don't have a job...Guess what you do..we goofed...sorry. **crickets chirping**

Um, this is screwing with the officers' family unit. How is an officer supposed to do his/her job effectively if they are stressed out. Guess what? They carry guns!!!

Good Lord, people....
