"We don't have (the money now) to assist the veterans in what they need ... There's only one of me (and) I love my job, but there's only so much you can do in a 10- or 12-hour day," said Jeanne C. Thick, director of the county Department of Veterans Services.
Commissioners, particularly Ted Henry of Clayton Township, and Thick have been talking for some time about the potential for a veterans millage. The department has only a few employees and a budget of less than $400,000 annually.
Thick told commissioners that the department is bracing for expected cuts in state funding for service officers who process claims for assistance that bring county veterans tens of millions of dollars every year.
