I was driving down Saginaw Street and realized the pickers had struck again. This time it is the former Kennedy center at Saginaw and Mary Streets. Just like the former Heartland manor someone has been removing the windows for the metal frames. Wood window framing is blowing in the wind. Every door is broken and open. No doubt the plumbing and other metal is gone.
Sadly, this area was the original linchpin to Smith Village and the city promised to fix the kennedy center and the Kennedy Pool as part of the Smith village project. The main Street Project was supposed to fix up the facades of the buildings in the area and improve the business climate of the area. Three of the five houses that were constructed on Chippewa, south of Mary, are vacant and boarde up. I was in the kennedy Pool a few years ago and it was completely destryed. Huge crated replacement parts had been canabalized for the metal. The project ended during the Stanley administration after hundreds of thousands of dollars had been spent and it finally was determined to be beyond repair. |
