Circuit Court Judge Archie Hayman

Archie Hayman Takes
Out Petitions to Run
for Mayor of Flint:
Which Archie Hayman?

Rumors are circulating today that Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Archie Hayman has taken out petitions to run for mayor of Flint. Hayman was not at work Wednesday and could not be reached for comment.

"Maybe he's out campaigning," said one person at the court house when asked if he had heard the rumors. An employee at Judge Hayman's chambers said, "I have no idea if it's true. You will have to talk to him but I do know he does have a son named Archie. I will make sure he gets the message to call you tomorrow to set the record straight."

The latest candidate in the race for Flint's mayoral job, Scott Smith, confirmed that he saw Hayman's name on the list of individuals who had so far taken out petitions. "Archie Hayman's name was right before mine," Smith said. "I think he will be the man to beat if he's in the race because he's a well-known name. Maybe there's another Archie Hayman. But if it's Judge Hayman, my prediction is that he will be on the ballot against me in the general election."

Flint Board of Education Trustee David Davenport said Judge Hayman isn't qualified for the job. "I'm the only one in the race who has the experience of serving in public office to deal with a budget of millions of dollars," Davenport said. "Judge Hayman does not scare me. He can't beat me. Everyone knows who I am and everyone knows who he is. That right there will beat him. Dayne Walling has run this city in the ground and I'm the only candidate people know can go in there and fix this city."

Davenport was escorted out of the last Flint City Council meeting by the police after Flint City Council President Jackie Poplar ordered him removed for an outburst during comments by City Councilman Delrico Loyd. Smith also spoke Monday at the Flint City Council meeting.

Walling, Kayamonte Sutton, Ryan Eashoo and Willie James Thomas II are the others who have taken out petitions to run for mayor. Whoever gets 900 signatures of registered voters before May 10 can get their name on the ballot for the August primary. The top two vote getters in the primary move on to the general election later this year in November.

Sutton is a 24-year-old military veteran who works as a director at EcoVillage and he has never before ran for office. Thomas is a 19-year-old first-time political candidate who works in sales. Eashoo is a successful realtor with REMAX and hosts a live radio talk show every Thursday at 3 pm on FlintTalkRadio.com. Walling became mayor in August 2009 when defeating Brenda Clack in a special election to fill out the term of Don Williamson who resigned in February 2009 because of health reasons. Williamson defeated Walling in the November 2007 mayoral election.

Walling, who survived a recall attempt that began barely after he completed the six-month period eligible to face one, has been widely criticized by business leaders and city council members because of a deficit situation. The city is more than $17 million in debt, according to an audit completed earlier this month by Plante Moran. Walling's administration got the city council to approve making an application to get a $20 million bailout from the state on Jan. 10. Walling hasn't been able to get on the agenda yet to make his pitch for financial help to the State Administrative Board's finance committee.

Another potential mayoral hopeful, Genesee County Sheriff's Department Captain Terence Green, has not yet taken out petitions but told the South Side Crime Watch Group last week that he will run against Walling in August.

Loyd declared Monday at the city council meeting that he won't be running for mayor. He became the third city councilman to make such a declaration, following an official announcement two weeks ago by Josh Freeman on the heels of last fall's declaratioon by Sheldon Neeley that he "will not put his family through another run for mayor." Neeley came in third behind Williamson and Walling in the 2007 primary. Neeley also lost out in the primary in 2009 to Walling and Clack.

Pat Clawson, a former CNN investigative reporter who now works as a process server and private investigator, is another potential candidate. "I'm surveying the field of candidates and taking a hard look at the idea of running," Clawson said. "My first step would be to get strong support from the business community, then I would need to move back into the city. My wife works for the Flint school system but it would be hard to put my business on hold to do this. We have to look at the financial side of whether or not it's feasible. If Archie Hayman is in the race, I'm not sure I would try because I don't think anybody can beat him."

Attorney Terry Bankert, who has declared that he may consider running if there's a state takeover, was quick to point out that he doubts Judge Hayman would run. "It may be his son," Bankert said. "I can't see Judge Hayman wanting the headaches unless he's thinking about using it as a stepping stone to running for Dale Kildee's seat in Congress next time."

Another long-time political observer, who asked not to be identified, pointed to Judge Hayman as an immediate front runner because he's a well-known and well-respected African American in a city that has a majority of its voters as African-Americans. "If it is Judge Hayman's son, it might be a good idea to let the rumor float around without Judge Hayman saying anything, just keeping a low profile for a while to let people wonder," he said. "Announcing immediately it's actually not him, but his son, would kill the talk about it. That would be smart thinking politically because it would keep the talk going for a while to draw attention to it. I'm not sure anybody knows who Archie Hayman's son is right now, but they sure would if they keep the rumor going on which Archie Hayman it actually is who is running for mayor."

I have been told that the Judicial canons disallow Hayman from running for office for a specific time after leaving office. He also has to be careful of his involvement in an election. He certainly is spicing up the speculation.

Terry, you should know that Kildee's Congressional seat is reserved for Woodrow Stanley.

Judge Archie Hayman
Flattered as Woman
Pushes Him for Mayor

Flint Mayor Dayne Walling has one fewer challenger in his hopes of winning re-election. Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Archie Hayman isn't running for mayor of Flint and his son by the same name does not want the job. That was the official word Thursday from a spokesman on behalf of Judge Hayman.

"His son has the same name but Archie checked with him to make sure and he has no intentions of running for mayor of Flint," she said. "The judge did not take out petitions to run. It's his understanding that a woman took them out under his correct name of Archie L. Hayman but he has no plans of running for mayor of Flint. His son does go under the same name but he does not live in the area and told his dad that he has no plans to move to Flint."

If the woman plans on circulating petitions on behalf of Hayman, she would need his signature to turn in the 900 names necessary to get Hayman on the ballot for the August primary.
