FLINT, Michigan — The city of Flint is now the owner of one of the largest brownfields in the county.

The Flint City Council voted 7-1 on Monday night for the city to take ownership of the former “Chevy in the Hole” manufacturing site from the Flint Economic Development Corp.

City officials have said they want to use federal grant dollars to turn the 103 acres of mostly concrete into a low-maintenance green space.

The city has secured a $375,000 grant from U.S. Forestry Services for use at Chevy in the Hole and is expecting a $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, officials said.

Steve Montle, green initiatives coordinator, said the city would be protected from environmental liability under two different federal regulatory measures.

The former manufacturing complex — a focal point of the Sit-Down Strike of 1936-37 — has sat lifeless in the center of the city, just south of Kettering University, since the last operating facility shut down in 2004.

Most of the buildings in the complex were torn down in the late 1990s.

The property is owned by the Flint Economic Development Corp., which acquired it for $1 with a quit claim deed from Delphi Corp. in 2008.

Councilman Bryant Nolden was the lone “no” vote. Council Vice President Dale Weighill was absent.
