GENESEE TOWNSHIP, Michigan — Township supervisor Steven D. Fuhr says help from the state is needed to draw residents back to the area.

Genesee Township was in the bottom five of latest U.S. Census numbers for Genesee County communities, falling 2,544 residents, or 10.5 percent, since 2000 to 21,581 residents.

"We figured with the foreclosure rate in Genesee Township, we surmised it would have been about 1,500 residents (lost)," said Fuhr, who also touted job losses as a reason for the population change.

"We need jobs in the area to keep everybody here," said Fuhr. "I think people are moving out-of-state to find jobs."

Fuhr commented officials try to advertise the township on a local level, but "some sort of tax incentive from the state" is needed to entice businesses into the township.

The change in population figures may have some effect on the township's revenue sharing, but Fuhr was unclear on how much the city may lose in funding from the state.

Doesn't even appear the supervisor is sure how to get the tax incentives or what he wants. Seems like a cry of desperation.
