Today's Detroit Free Press features a proposed bill to help with the cost of street lights.
Detroit owns heir street lights and Bing proposes decommissioning some lights in unpopulated areas.
Flint had the Department of Energy Grant that was supposed to deal with this issue. Council initially rejected her proposal because it did not address the safety concerns of the lights her company proposed.
Although Brown was optimistic on recovering the grant, word is the Department of Energy has rejected renewal.
Brown is adding a $100 fee to the taxes to cover the cost of street lights. |

This is House bill 5688, also known as the Municipal Lighting Authority, and it was introduced by State rep Maureen Stapleton. It applies to cities that own their street light grids.
While this may not apply to Flint, it reopens the issue of possibly shrinking the city . The never ending exodus and rash of fires have already rendered some areas nearly depopulated. Those of us remaining can ill afford to pay for continuing services to these unpopulated areas. It takes businesses and residents to bear the cost of streets, water, sewer, snow plowing and lighting maintenance.
The burden of these costs will increase on individuals as more residents, black and white, leave because of the uncurbed crime and concerns over public safety. |

Naturally, those left in the areas where services are curtailed or cut off will still be expected to pay the taxes for services they no longer receive. |

I noticed that the fee has now been lowered to $62. I thought Brown claimed he was getting the DOE grant back. that was also to deal with cutting costs on street lights and traffic lights. |
