Police ask for community action to combat crime
By Matt Franklin
FLINT (WJRT) - (02/12/07)-- Flint city leaders want the community to take a stand after the biggest 24 hour violent crime surge the city has seen in recent years.
Flint police last Friday responded to two shootings and one attack. Early Saturday morning, police found a man shot inside a Flint apartment complex.
All of the victims were killed.
Police say all of the incidents are unrelated.
Acting Flint Police Chief Gary Hagler says detectives have solved one case and there are persons of interest in two other cases. Hagler, however, would not elaborate on the cases from the weekend, but instead focused on the department's efforts to combat street violence.
This morning at Flint City Hall, the police chief, Mayor Don Williamson and members of the Concerned Pastors Group talked about some of the initiatives being worked on for the city.
To help reduce the amount of crime, the chief says the department is increasing patrol activities in the areas where the violent crime has been occurring.
The department is increasing the number of officers on the street, in order to quickly get an officer to a scene.
Hagler says in the department's budget request, he will ask to reopen the city jail. The department will add seven new police officers by the summer.
There is a plan that will work in conjunction with the concerned pastors, designed to come up with activities for the city's youth.
More importantly, Hagler says, is community involvement in the fight against crime.
"We encourage people to call us on any information that they may have on any crimes that occurred in our community," Hagler said.
"We need to get some things in place to protect people in our community who are afraid to step forward. And the reasons they may be afraid to step forward is the criminal they are telling on might live on their street, might be two doors down or their cousin might live next door."

This morning at Flint City Hall, the police Chief/Mayor Don Williamson and members of the Concerned Pastors Group talked about some of the initiatives being worked on for the city.
