FLINT -- Outgoing Flint school Superintendent Walter Milton Jr.'s full-time stint heading the district will end Friday, the Flint Board of Education decided tonight, but Milton will continue working as a consultant and collect his salary until June 30. Milton will be paid at a rate of $156,060 per year, which would amount to about $20,000. He's leaving to take a job as superintendent of schools in Springfield, Ill....

yeah, that is kind of SOP handling of any outgoing CEO these days, lotsa nice perks with those golden parchutes, new jobs etc. See, I wouldn't have a problem IF the FCS cut Miltie adrift and he didn't have a position to go to. Nor if he was staying around to help transition. BUT, Springfield wants him early, even before his oficial hire date. And Ms Thompson was highly placed on his team already, so she knows whats going on, what needs attention etc.....so very little transition may be necessary.
hope the incoming crew remembers that when they're wrestling with the budget deficit Miltie is leaving them. For god's sake, HIRE a budget director, not a hired hand who will jiggle the numbers anywhich way the bossman wants them too.
what will be key in watching is who Ms Thompson puts in some key positions, and whether she gets the allocation of funds BACK on track and legal.
now lets wait and see if anything blows up and forces some outside independent review/audit, or whether the new crew can safely negotiate the risks and challenges without the ship running aground and requiring real crisis management.
i think though, the CS has turned a significant corner. Lest I'm hopeful they have. |
