FLUSHING - As she left the polls Tuesday, a Flushing voter had a simple answer to how she felt about a millage proposal to renovate a historic building as a public library.
"I voted no," said the 32-year-old woman, who declined to give her name.
"We're trying to sell our house. When we moved into the city five years ago, our taxes were about $2,200 per year. They are over $3,000 now. ... The current library is very adequate for the city's needs."
The request for 0.7 mills to fund a $1.6-million renovation of the old City Hall building went down by more than 4-to-1 and nearly took several city officeholders with it.
The same scenario played out all across the area on Election Day, as Genesee County and Lapeer County voters said no to every government request for money.
Flushing voters rejected a 0.7-mill tax to renovate the former City Hall building as a public library, 83.5 percent to 16.5 percent.
Mt. Morris voters trounced a Headlee tax rollback request by an overwhelming margin.
Voters in the LakeVille School District shot down a school bond extension that would have raised $5.5 million for infrastructure and athletic field improvements.
In Thetford Township, a request for a 1-mill levy over 10 years to fund a police department expansion lost by nearly a 3-1 ratio. |

Maybe even the libs are tired of the constant demands for more money. |

Adam I wouldn't call it conservatism, but rather people being over taxed. People are making less money and paying more for everything these days. Wether your democrat or republican, it hits all of us.
