My current job is being shipped off to Virginia sometime next year, and I will not be going with it. So I'm in search of a new one.
Just wondering if it's even worth my time and effort to look for something in/around Flint, or if I should only focus my search further south. I have been commuting daily to Oakland County for the past five years and quite frankly, I'm tired of it. I would LOVE to work closer to home and save all that time and money, but I also know there's just not much to be had around here. I have some time and am willing to be patient and wait a bit for something to come up.
I have an English degree, I'm a whiz on the computer and love to help other people. I don't require much, but do need enough to get my bills paid! So a retail/cashier job isn't going to do it for me (I've had quite enough of those anyway), but I'm not going to be very picky.
Thoughts? |

I would avoid job hunting in Flint at all costs...but then I hate rejection.
Seriously, though: Do you have any non-profit experience? The charitable organizations all seem to be very busy right now...and some of them don't pay half bad.
Off the top of my head:
Big Brothers/Big Sisters
Food Bank of Eastern Michigan
Catholic Charities
Whaley Children's Home |

You just have to be in the right place at the right time. If you are tired of commuting, look closer to home. What do you have to lose? You might get lucky and then it would be worth the effort. Good luck! |

What city do you work in now? You might be able to get a job in Oakland County. Unfortunately the reality is jobs are much easier to find in places like Florida and Texas though. |

I work in Auburn Hills now. Used to work in Bloomfield Hills... THAT was a killer commute. Driving down to Square Lake Rd. during rush hour was bad enough... then they closed it off for construction in '05 which forced me to crawl through downtown Pontiac every day to get to Woodward Ave. Ugh. It's a little easier now but is still 45 minutes one way. That time could be better spent, I dunno, volunteering or something.
I haven't had much non-profit experience but would love working for one. I worked for a short time at the Learning Resource Center at UM-Flint while I was still going to school there (before they made it part of the rest of the library)... had a bad manager and quit after a few months. Hopefully that has not blacklisted me in the education/nonprofit realm around here... LOL. That was several years ago now and all my other jobs I've had, I left on a positive note.
I don't really feel like leaving Michigan. There's too much brain drain going on now as it is. That, and all my family is here, and ya know what, I like it here!
I would need $11-$12+/hour to squeak by. (I make about $35K/year now.) |

Thanks all for the suggestions! It's been a while since I've looked for a new job... probably should have stayed on top of that, LOL.
My experience has been that the big websites (Monster, CareerBuilder, HotJobs) publish a lot of work at home, pyramid schemes, etc. Also the military, which is legitimate work but not something I'm interested in doing... so it takes a lot of time to sift through the bogus postings and find something good! I've actually had better luck with the good old-fashioned classifieds than I have with the websites.
I was trained to be a writer and am going to work on that in my spare time, but of course I need something to make some money until I publish my first novel! I have a few ideas brewing, and whatever I write will be set in Flint. It's the perfect mix of hope and desperation to fuel, I dunno, a romance novel or something.
