You can demolish ugly buildings all day long, but people will still be around. You can't exactly demolish people.
Our city can't be safe and prosperous unless the people living here decide they want it that way! |

Our son has. He's called building inspection so many times they know his voice. The taxes on 3 of them aren't delinquent enough for foreclosure yet. Yup - the owner's been paying taxes all these years; he just stopped because the city condemned the houses. They must now go through all the official procedures before they can be demolished. This includes, per the building inspector, approval by 7 different agencies, including the State DEQ. They check for asbestos, I guess. There's also a hearing, where the owner can protest the demolition, and take the City to court before they can be demolished. The 4th house has been on the demolition list for over a year; utilities are cut off, but no idea when it'll be torn down. |

The Land Bank tearing down houses is a good thing most of the time. Most people think they can renovate a house, but it takes years to do.

I renovated my house in 1 year completely new interior (mechanical included)and re-adjusting the curb appeal. A year later I completely remodeled the exterior.
Now my home now has new windows, doors, siding, roof, plumbing , furnace, electrical, drywall, flooring etc . That was all done as an over the road truck driver only home 34 hours per weekend in 2 years. Granted if I had the time it would have been done in months.
The homes that take years to remodel are the ones where the owners are not commited to repairing them, or do not have the financial capability. These homes may take ten years to do. But do the ends justify the means if the neighborhood has a brand new renovated home when the project is complete?
The particular home in the article could have been remodeled by me and my brothers (all 5) who have a combined construction experience of almost 50 years. The project could have been completed in under 6 months.
I do agree with your comment that some homes take years to refurbish. But Ryan as a realtor you must know it can be done in months if you need too. I am pretty sure it does not take you years to remodel one if you need to. |

I have fixed up/restored several houses, it all depends on the resources the person doing the repairs have. It can be done in 3 months or 10 years.
