FLINT - Some parents who teach others about school curriculum may soon lose their jobs.
The Flint School district cannot pay these parents - called parent facilitators - at Whittier Classical Academy, Central Success Academy and Southwestern Success Academy.
The jobs are funded by Title I, a federal program that provides money to disadvantaged schools. Other schools in the district can keep their facilitators because they did not meet the No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress requirements.
Title I funds cannot be used to pay the parents at Whittier Classical Academy, Central Success Academy and Southwestern Success Academy because
the schools met AYP standards
.
The layoffs will be discussed at Wednesday's school board meeting. |

i agree 100% adam. it's looks as though the successful schools
are being punished for being effective?? so backward!!!! although,
i must admit, it's a great way to insure a larger percentage of non-
productive people. an underclass. |

Many students do better academically because parents are involved.
Notice these are the only secondary schools that have made AYP.
It is very hard to have involved parents at secondary level.
Elementary schools have made AYP and still have Title I funding?
Many parents have been disenfranchised by the system by the time students reach secondary schools and it is hard to keep them involved.
This is the time that parents need more resources to keep kids in school. How to deal with peer pressure, communicate with 6 teachers instead of one, how to help kids with homework etc.
Links between school and parents are most crucial at 7th grade level prior to 9th grade dropouts.
Could it be these parent facilitators are doing great work? So lets cut what is working?
The question would be.. do the secondary schools not making AYP have facilitators that are performing? Do they have to large of a caseload?
Do these secondary schools that are not performing even have a parent facilitator?
Peace,.

"Three Flint schools improved their test scores enough last year that they met federal standards.
Their reward?
They may soon lose the paid parent facilitators who taught the parents of students about the curriculum - which some say helped students score high enough to meet Adequate Yearly Progress standards laid out by the No Child Left Behind Act.
The facilitators at Whittier Classical Academy, Central Academy and Southwestern Academy are paid with federal Title 1 dollars - and that money no longer will be available because the schools met AYP standards. The schools did not meet the standards in previous years." |

i am assuming their thinking is since they've made the improvement,
services are no longer required. duh!!! if it ain't broke don't fix it!
it's interesting in that government will spend big dollars on wars,
pet projects, waste and abuse yet, allow the very foundation of america's
existance be compromised. the proposed 40 cent tax per gallon of gas
to fix american roads?? i thought taxes were to be used among other things
to keep the infrastructure at least current!! |

Nah, thats just what the Constitution says Federal government is too busy trying to dictate what gets taught in schools, Who can say what in them, and filling their cronies pockets by mandating millions of dollars worth of materials be used... you guessed it.. printed by their cronies... |
