I got the feeling he was looking for decay before he got here. Flint is NOT hopeless! Some people look at downtown; I look at the neighborhoods. That's where the ordinary, everyday people live, not in downtown lofts. If downtown succeeds and the neighborhoods fail, where are we? There are people in every neighborhood that care. Some are afraid, some have almost given up. If they see that others care, things can be turned around, one block at a time. There's no silver bullet, just people that care about their neighborhoods and neighbors working to make things better. Tear down the abandoned houses, sell the lots to us for 50 bucks, like they do. We'll keep them mowed, plant flowers & vegetable gardens and keep the neighborhoods looking nice.
If we overcome fear and stand together, we can make a difference. |
