'One-Fifty' only scratched surface of Flint memories, milestones
Posted by Jeff Johnston | The Flint Journal January 18, 2008 09:50AM

Two readers mentioned the late Rose Mary DeRosia, and our list would truly be incomplete without one of the city's all-time great characters.
"Rosie," as she was universally known, had one true love in life: singing. Her theme song was "Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey," and for years she would belt it out anyplace, anytime - especially if there was a band or a crowd nearby.
Physically disabled and a survivor of 30 years in a mental institution, she was not homeless but spent much of her time on Flint streets, hitch-hiking to get around.
Rosie got her moment in the limelight for her 68th birthday, in 1987, when 500 people came out to hear her sing - backed by some of Flint's top musicians - in a concert put on just for her at the Windmill Place marketplace.
Rosie died March 18, 1990, after being hit by a car. Benefit concerts and fundraisers paid for a complete funeral and a headstone inscribed with the opening notes of "Bill Bailey." |

Anybody remember....there used to be a black guy with two great danes. He had those dogs trained like nothing I've ever seen. He'd stand on the lawn in front of city hall and wave his hands a certain way and they would do all kinds of tricks. |

I'll add a few more:
You know what the "hole" is by the river.
You know what the "Hog Backs" are
You played the number in the shop
You remember the Spirits, Bulldogs, and Falcons
You know who the GOOCH and E.T. are
The best one you had was "the Hamady sack". Wow. |

That made me smile, being an old gal who grew up in Flint.
Brought me back to a date with a guy going to GMI who was from CA. I loved eating at Angelos! I told him how great the food was. We went there and he ordered a chef's salad - saying he didn't feel like a coney or cb. Then to top it off, he found my fries & gravy odd; but put mayo on his! WTF That was our 3rd and final date.
Some things just aren't acceptable!
LOL
This old NWside Gal thanks you for that list! I've passed it on to quite a few friends in my generation who have enjoyed it.
Love those memory flashbacks! |
