Flint makes another 'worst' list
by Bryn Mickle | The Flint Journal
Tuesday May 20, 2008, 8:58 PM
FLINT, Michigan -- Once again, Flint has found itself the recipient of a rather dubious distinction.

The new issue of the men's magazine Best Life, published by Men's Health, puts the city on its list of the 10 worst cities in the nation to raise a family.

Why? Crime.

"Country's highest violent-crime rate," the magazine claims.

Aside from employment levels, Editor Stephen Perrine says the magazine also considered crime rate, median home value, sprawl and the number of parks and museums in arriving at its list of the 100 best and 10 worst cities.

Flint ranked seventh worst and was joined on the list of worsts by Clarksville, Tenn.; Philadelphia; Dayton, Ohio; and several Texas cities.

Flint Mayor Don Williamson is reserving his opinion until he sees the magazine.

"I haven't seen it, so I can't comment," Williamson said Tuesday night.

So what place is so great? Honolulu.

Aside from all the beaches on Oahu, the magazine was also impressed with the low unemployment and relatively high per-pupil spending by the island's public schools.

San Diego, Calif.; Des Moines, Iowa; Billings, Mont.; Madison, Wis.; and Minneapolis, Minn. also made the top cut.

Men's Health and Best Life are not the most reliable source for this type of information. 40% ads 60% fluff. If, however, you want washboard abs in 6 weeks Men's Health is for you.

Indeed. Guess I'll be sticking witht the sprinkler in the back yard this year. That seems to be the most appropriate match for my abs.

I would agree that in general terms Men's Health is a mag for narcissists. But, maybe you should take a drive between Dort and the river, between, say, Whaley Park and Robert T... I find it quite shocking, not to mention the Saginaw St. corridor. Those are only the first two areas that come to mind. Sad.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Flint is a great place to raise kids. I grew up in the "state street" area that you are talking about. My parents still live there and we visit often. I recently moved my family out of Flint because of the lack of opportunities for kids. My wife and I gave it our best shot. We purchased a house in Flint and started our family. After our first we realized that we needed a bigger house. It took four years to sell that house and we came to the table with over 10 k just to unload it. After that (and electing Williamson) We moved in with relatives until we bought a house in the suburbs. My son is playing t-ball, my daughter is in dance classes, all community sponsored. I'd love to see Flint make a comeback, we just weren't willing to wait any more.

Hey, I agree totally. I wasn't trying to make you look silly or naive. I just think it's a damn shame to see what has become of that area. I went to Sobey, Lowell and F.C. so I know the area well. I hate to say that you made the right decision getting out. I owned a house in Flint for 10 years and only got what I bought it for. My parents still live there.

My dad would be at a complete loss for which color leather shoes goes with which color shirt if not for the illustrious fashion consultants of Men's Health.

I'm a total narcissist, so I guess maybe your characterization is correct and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...

I'm always hard pressed to explain where I grew up. For example, I had a Flint mailing address, but I wouldn't call the area where I grew up "Flint" per se. What should I call it? I went to Kearsley, if that helps explain a little.

The logical choice would be "Genesee Township", I suppose, but that doesn't feel quite right either.

Unfortunately, even on the "safe" east side:

- 85 year old neighbor across the street was raped and left for dead
- our house was robbed 3 times before we got an alarm system, attempted robbery once after that
- watched the neighbor hold his girlfriend hostage in her car with a shotgun
- DIFFERENT neighbor's son got out of prison, stabbed the father and brother
- multiple instances of peeping toms
- resentful neighbors dumped ink into one house's pool; another neighbor dumped sand, toilet paper and broken records into ours

Yay Flint. At least it makes me the colorful one in other places...

Perhaps the abysmal rating is because the two best employment opportunities in Flint are working at the Kwik E Mart, or robbing it with the latter being more lucrative.
