Gary HaglerFLINT, Michigan -- Acting Flint Police Chief Gary Hagler has retired to take what he's calling his dream job as the state Department of Natural Resources' top cop.
Hagler, 45, confirmed today that he will start his new job on Monday, and Mayor Don Williamson said he will announce an interim replacement at a press conference that same day.

"It is a dream job. I'm very fortunate to become a part of the DNR," Hagler said. "They have a rich history. I'm ecstatic to become a member of that team.

"It's a fantastic opportunity. I can't think of a better job," he said.

Hagler denied that his decision was tied to Williamson's proposed 2008-09 budget, which is headed to the City Council Monday.

For the police department, Williamson proposed cutting 59 officers, something Hagler said last week would leave the department short-staffed even if the council restores some of the proposed cuts and manages to keep the city jail open part time.

"The mayor is a businessman," Hagler said. "He does his best to operate city government like a business. I understand that concept.

"You never get along with anybody 100 percent in life (but) we got along. He is the mayor. The mayor is the CEO of the city."

Asked about Hagler's status today, Williamson initially said he had "no knowledge" of him leaving his position but later acknowledged he was.

"It will be a tremendous loss for the city of Flint," Williamson said. "He probably did more than any other chief ever dreamed of."

Hagler was the city's acting chief, a move that allowed him to run the department but continue building his retirement in the same system he started in as an officer.

He said the city needs "to retain as many Flint police officers as possible and keep that jail open."

"We've made great strides, and I don't want to see that turn around," he said.

Flint's violent crime rate declined in the first six months of 2007, federal crime statistics show.

Hagler cited his involvement in an investigation into the Spanish Cobras gang in the 1990s as one of his proudest moments. The investigation helped bring down members of the gang.

City Councilman Jim Ananich said he did not agree with many of the personnel moves that Hagler carried out but said he respected the acting chief.

"He was very responsive," Ananich said. "He served the city of Flint very well."

"Acting Flint Police Chief Gary Hagler has retired to take what he's calling his dream job as the state Department of Natural Resources' top cop. "

Will game violators from Flint get a little leeway now?
