A few people have asked "What would Flint have been like without GM?"
A good analogy to consider is "What would Germany have been like without Hitler?" Well, Hitler in the mid-late 30's brought economic power to Germany. Jobs, pride, and all that nationalism and patriotism. But the people paid a high price. He also brought World War II and with it, the deaths of 60 million people worldwide in the greatest (largest) conflict known to man.
Germany doesn't pay tribute, or for that matter, even recognize, to any degree shape or form, what Hitler did for the country that could be construed as "positive" (like the autobahn, for instance, or major advancements in rocket and aviation sciences).
Why not? The horror and tragedy of Hitler's crimes outweighs everything. Everything. Not a shred of good is ever bestowed Hitler. No honor. Nothing. Madam Tussauds wax museum in Berlin recently installed a wax statue of Hitler, and someone ran up and ripped its head off. Good for them, I say. While the dark period of human history should not be forgotten, it shouldn't be made into a holiday, or a wax figure.
The fact that Flint is not only recognizing GM, but throwing a 100th birthday party, is perhaps the most ironic event in America since Mackinaw Island started producing diet fudge.
Apparently the GM 100 organizers in Flint forgot to watch "Roger & Me" where Moore clearly states "I guess no one wants to celebrate human tragedy while on vacation." The people that will show up to these events won't largely be from Flint, and when its all said and done, they'll head back home to the suburbs and other outlying ares.
Just like the Crim every year.
GM may have been founded in Flint (actually New Jersey but who's counting) but with all those pesky plant closings, layoffs, and the economic vacuum that was filled with drugs, crime, and despair, who has the energy for a party? Take the money and send five needy high school seniors to college. You'll get far more return on your investment.
I got into a debate about all of this with one of the event organizers who said "If you don't like this event, don't attend!"
I couldn't agree more. And I hear they have air conditioning at the Traverse City Film Festival...
Do you feel that GM owes Flint, or any other city, good paying jobs forever?

GM compared to Hitler now theres a lib analogy for ya. Jeez Chittle get a friggin life. Your opinions and thoughts on GM and the shop rats who worked there became irrelevant the day you bought your first Saab to keep up with your trendy snobbish compadres.

One of our neighbors has one. It's in the shop with assorted electrical problems more than it's on the road.

No shit sherlock thats whats comical all the libs who wouldnt be seen in an inferior "American built" ride buying those weird sounding vehicles in their vain attempt to be trendy and show all their limp wristed pals how to stick it to GM and the USA and the money winds up in GMs pocket anyhow. I would venture you are actually probably a Subaru driver. Remember the Ad with the irritating actor laying under all those "OTHER" rides touting all the benefits the little rice grinder ride had. He even looked a little like you.

Partly true, but not when it comes to the Japanese brands, which have a fierce customer loyalty, and which is why Toyota will be the #1 car maker by this time next year, if not sooner.
GM just can't market anymore. Remember NUMMI and Geo? That was a partnership with Japan, including TOYOTA! Those were pretty good little cars. Not great but good. They served a purpose and a niche.
GM could have built a Tesla-like car, which has a waiting list! But NO! Hydrogen, that's the future! It's freezing cold, a haz-mat, hard to handle, and requires special filling stations.
That'll work!
