There are also pictures of the inside of the Durant that were taken a couple of weeks ago up on www.flickr.com. If you have a flickr account, you can search for "Durant Hotel" and find them. |

I heard on Channel 12 news that Dan Kildee said he had no control over who was hired. Funny...if the Land Bank owns the property, why can't he dictate who works on it? Oh wait...he can...he just didn't. Good job! (NOT) |

Kildee isn't the developer. |

He's the head of the Land Bank. Either he, or the rest of the board - Stanley, Sims, Speed - could have insisted that local workers be hired. So much for thinking of the local folks. |

I wish things were that simple. This historic building has been sitting empty in the downtown for over 30 years. It would have been far easier to tear it down than to restore it. I imagine that Kildee was excited to find anyone who would commit to re-opening it, and has become hard pressed to do anything that might chase the developers away. |

It porbably would have been smarter to tear it down and use it as a parking lot. That may have avoided $10 million in fines taxes and confiscated cars for the coming parking garage. Oh wait who cars about people having their cars confiscated when we can "save history". |

Listen people, restoring the Durant is absolutely necessary. A gaudy dorm building wouldn't work at such a predominant intersection in the center of town, adjacent to those other historic buildings. Also, there is a FRIGGIN' WAR MEMORIAL right in front. And lastly, restoring the Durant is a metaphor for "we work with what we got" attitude that Flint needs. If you tear everything down all you get is cheap garbage built in its place.
Pick up "Architecture for Dummies" and get a clue.
Check out these two very different Bed Bath & Beyonds! Historical beauty has no price tag. Keeping the original is always preferred.
