This is a discussion board primarily about Flint Michigan.
I understand the importance of discussion of world news and I don't mind a story here and there.
Would it be better to reference a sentence, but no more than a paragraph of a story , unless it pertains to Flint or the surrounding area?
This board is no longer mine to run, it is yours and I would like to do what the members want.
What do you guys think?

Steve, I prefer a writer's opinion along with a link to the facts or an article supporting the opinion. The cut-and-paste method of contributing to the board is laziness, and makes flinttalk.com look unprofessional.
However, in the interest of free speech, I don't see how you could enforce any kind of ban.
Hopefully over time the cut-and-paste artists will learn what they are doing is self-defeating, actually hurts their arguments, and will become self-policing. |

Marko, your statement contradicts itself. Actually, just the first one.
If it’s the writer’s opinion, how can there be facts about their feelings or beliefs? I can understand, and want to see, support of such an argument or statement that one provides, but opinions are based on how one feels about a subject, not necessarily if they’re right about it. I’m actually being much too picky about your verbiage - I totally agree with your post.
The fact of the matter is, I agree with everything you said. I’m huge in the belief that the cut-and-paste method of contributing to the board is laziness, and makes flinttalk.com look unprofessional. I couldn’t have put it better myself.
As you mentioned, I’m not sure Steve could or should enforce such a ban, in the interest of free speech. If I may “cut and paste” your last line, as I feel it says it all perfectly: Hopefully over time the cut-and-paste artists will learn what they are doing is self-defeating, actually hurts their arguments, and will become self-policing.
Hey, that cut and paste thing wasn’t so bad! |

It's true. We are all striving to make flinttalk the single most
professional
'my-opinion-is-better-than-yours' digital lotion and kleenex website in the business. Our first priority shall be protecting ourselves from reading what somebody else has pasted or linked to (FYI: html linking is the benchmark for sanitizing shared intellectual pornography) at all costs. To assist us in this mission, I thought I'd introduce fellow-users to a nifty new web application called "iGNORE.' It's super easy to use. When you open a post, simply decide if it's something that fits your personal standards of mental masturbation etiquette, judge the postee silently to yourself, and move on. I hope this helps our collective effort to move away from our disgusting amateurism, towards some truly professional jerking off.
If you'll excuse me now, I have to go enlighten some hacks to the dangers of their outrageously inappropriate email cc'ing habits.
Together, we can reshape the virtual world into one that any office manager would be proud to call home. |

It's always worked for me. I simply bypass anything pasted.
I know where to find news and commentary. I come hear for the same reason I skip to the letters section of whatever paper I find; to see what real people outside of the media think.
Pasting a link to a source, or a sentence or two validating a point the writer is making is one thing, but "show and tell" this ain't. So when people cut long essays, I simply pass them by. |

Mr. D, thanks for the humor. I do take myself too seriously. My thoughts when using the word "professional" were meant for Steve. I've built a couple of discussion boards over the years (most were unsuccessful, I'll be the first to admit. This is hard to do.) and in my experience you try to balance lively discussion with the ability to attract new contributing members and make the board self-sustaining...and ultimately profitable (no flame, Steve deserves to make a living).
You are correct - ignoring cut and paste works for folks like you already committed to the board. New viewers, however, tend to view it as "nothing important here" and move on.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have a couple of Flint businesses I'm considering recommending advertising here, so I want to make sure this is a positive move for them financially. |

I apologize for the snarkiness, but I guess we just disagree. There are times when people post things from other sites that I know I would never visit on my own. Or more to the point: that other, more polished media sources would never touch – usually because they are looking out for the 'financial interests' of their advertisers. Adam's recent post on Medical Marijuana or anything related to unions are two examples that some people happen to think 'are important' – and who are looking for any free and open space to share critical content with people 'not in the choir.' In the interest of free speech (which you mentioned before), I happened to think it's better to preserve that quality – for those and other issues – than to start down the path of predetermining content and style for the sake of would-be advertisers.
PS: What's our cut? |

Sounds like we're in agreement on content...no offense taken.
I'm sure Steve is busy looking for a software plugin to have each of our shares in flinttalk.com deposited in
Swiss bank accounts.

Does not seem to be the case in my point Kevin. You just made a reference as to why I did not cut and paste yet here you say you ignore them.

I realize that younger internet viewers surf throught the net and have safety gadgets that protect their computers. They have fast internet connections to easily view videos or links.
The internet has progressed so fast that I have become old before my time.
I would rather have cut and pastes...words that support the story or opinion rather than a link I will hesitate to click on.
If someone pastes a lengthy text I can easily scan through(read quickly for important points) though if someone refers to a
link
I will not likely view it .
Old school readers like me may not be your target audience. I would rather have the whole story than someones brief opinion. I like to make my own conclusion.
My mom taught me to speed read. I can then go back and study the important portions if there are any.
Kids nowadays watch videos..sometimes I think they are to lazy to read.
Peace,
RAP |

Copying and pasting can save time. If Flinttalk wants to pay me I'd be happy to write some intelligent and original paleoconservative dissertations. It can also be a pain to re-write news stories when you can just copy and paste. |

Did you notice its always the libs on the forum who have the C-P problem and its whenever a factual article is pasted about their goofy agendas or heroes. Of course its a simple matter for them to just ignore any article that shows up on Flintalk but it appears they cant quite grasp that concept they claim they will but next thing you know there they are again condemming C-P. Libs they are a piece of work for sure. |
