Topic: Bold predictions for the next eight years

I sent this to the editors of the Flint Journal today, but I send a lot of letters to the Journal, and this one is probably longer than they'd like, so I'm sharing it with you:

Editors;

A lot of fantastic claims have been made, from the paranoid right to the Utopian left, about the upcoming Obama administration. I might not have a crystal ball, but as an amateur historian, I do have more than my share of predictions.

* In the next eight years, no serious attempts will be made by Washington to confiscate anybodies guns. This, however, will not stop groups like the National Rifle Association (NRA) to make a lot of money in increasing membership dues stoking fears that a repeal of the 2nd Amendment is right around the corner.
* The next president will still have to figure out what to do about the millions of people still not covered by health insurance. President-elect Obama will likely continue the government's two steps forward-one step back progress in this field. Meanwhile, in Japan, where all are covered with a form of universal health care, Toyota still has a marked advantage by not having to pay for their employees' coverage.
* Amnesty International will no longer send me and it's other members requests to send urgent letters protesting human rights abuses to the White House.
* Troops will be withdrawn from Iraq, and more will be sent to Afghanistan. The situation we leave in Iraq will be far from perfect, but we will be able to prevent the Taliban from re-taking Afghanistan.
* Moderates in Iran, who have been gaining power slowly from the ultra-extremist Mullahs, will continue to gain strength. Just as Cold-War presidents did with the Soviet Union, President Obama will encourage moderates within the their system, and contain Iran.
* I still won't have an electric car, but the United States will slowly begin to finally coax some of the alternative energy companies that sprouted up in Europe when President Reagan slashed subsidies, to build here.
* Two or three more Supreme Court justices will be appointed by the former constitutional professor, and these appointments will spend the next 30-40 years protecting all of our rights, including unenumerated rights like privacy, protected by the Ninth Amendment.
* The national debt will still be astoundingly high, but still a small percentage of our national GDP, and the days of annual surpluses seen during the Clinton administration will return.


In short, the next eight years will look a lot like the last 232. The next president after Obama will find himself with many of the same problems we have today, but won't have to spend as much time rebuilding bridges torn down by his predecessor. In a hundred years, the first black president will look an awful lot like a lot of other presidents. Not the best, but certainly not the worst either.

They'll just reinstate the so-called "assault weapons" ban, outlaw all semi automatic firearms, ban concealed carry, and do everything they can to turn law abiding gun owners into criminals.

The national debt, and Obama's programs, will require massive tax increases, leading to national bankruptcy.

That's why we have the Ninth Amendment. As it is written, it clearly states that Americans have rights not specifically mentioned in the first eight amendments, yet many jurists who make the complaint that you do, completely ignore this.

The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.


Therefore, the Constitution is "a living document" because it is written to be just that .

This is a point I'm pretty sure Barack Obama agrees with, and it's a good thing. I would hate to venture into the 21st century, with all of the technological means available to invade my personal life, without a Supreme Court that believes in a right to privacy.

Why you planning on joining a terrorist group or some other illegal activity?? Laughing

As far as the second amendment their will be plenty of gun hating Democrats trying to get Barack to impose their hair brained crime stopping anti gun ideas all of which he has openly supported in the past. Its apparent you have your crystal ball fired up again but you have no clue as to what he will do once he actually takes over.

Yeah, I think that would fall into the "paranoid right" kind of prediction that I referred to in the first line of my letter.

Hey Kevin give us one just one proven example of Barack voting in support of the 2nd and ill give you about 50 of him voting against. Paranoid??? no realistic, you bet. And of course as far as the 1st the whining democrats are all ready talking about the so called fairness doctrine being reborn. You know they cant hack it in talk radio so by god the other side aint gonna neither. Of course if you have inside info your boy would veto such a move why let not us know?

No No Back again im talking about libsmaking a go with their own talk radio programs. Air America dead, Mario Cuomo nobody listened, little Tommy Daschle about I week, Rosie Odonnels latest leftist filed comeback a total disaster Shocked Apparently even the libs cant stand to hear their nonsense being spewed over the airways. Laughing And of course they certainly cannot allow their agendas to be intelligently examined thus the latest attempt to bring back the fairness. Rolling Eyes F------ crybabies.

Besides, its another red herring. I still haven't heard any serious talk among liberal legislators about it, just conservatives who are trying to change the subject.

Schumer on Fox: Fairness Doctrine ‘fair and balanced’

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday defended the so-called Fairness Doctrine in an interview on Fox News, saying, “I think we should all be fair and balanced, don’t you?”

Schumer’s comments echo other Democrats’ views on reviving the Fairness Doctrine, which would require radio stations to balance conservative hosts with liberal ones.



Asked if he is a supporter of telling radio stations what content they should have, Schumer used the fair and balanced line, claiming that critics of the Fairness Doctrine are being inconsistent.

“The very same people who don’t want the Fairness Doctrine want the FCC [Federal Communications Commission] to limit pornography on the air. I am for that… But you can’t say government hands off in one area to a commercial enterprise but you are allowed to intervene in another. That’s not consistent.”

In 2007, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), a close ally of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) told The Hill, “It’s time to reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine. I have this old-fashioned attitude that when Americans hear both sides of the story, they’re in a better position to make a decision.”

Senate Rules Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) last year said, “I believe very strongly that the airwaves are public and people use these airwaves for profit. But there is a responsibility to see that both sides and not just one side of the big public questions of debate of the day are aired and are aired with some modicum of fairness.”

Conservatives fear that forcing stations to make equal time for liberal talk radio would cut into profits so significantly that radio executives would opt to scale back on conservative radio programming to avoid escalating costs and interference from the FCC.

They also note that conservative radio shows has been far more successful than liberal ones.

In his Fox interview, Schumer, who heads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, also weighed in on the election, predicting that Democrats will end up with between 56 and 58 seats in the Senate.

He also defended “card check” legislation, claiming there is a strong need to allow workers to cast a public ballot on whether they support the formation of a union.

Schumer said “there has to be some counter” to the leverage businesses have, claiming “employers have every leg up on people who want to organize and that’s why union workers have gone down from about 25 percent to 6 percent [in the private sector].”

Business groups adamantly oppose the card check bill, which passed the House and fell short of the necessary votes to overcome a filibuster in the Senate.

Much ado about nothing.

Here's another prediction. The Fairness Doctrine will never even come to a vote. Believe me, don't believe me, I don't care. Look back at all of the crazy theories you've had over the past few months, the ones I tried to calmly talk you down from, and let me know which ones you correctly predicted.

As far as the success or failure rate of "liberal talk shows" on the radio, I don't care to explain the reasons. I can speak from my own experience and say that I purchased XM satellite radio simply because it had Air America, and cancelled it when I found out that the shows were just as bad as those on the right. Just like Hannity and Limbaugh, they were filled with conspiracy theories, very little factual insight, and a lot of angry blather. Like Limbaugh, the hosts would often repeat key phrases over and over again, as if they were simply killing time before the next commerical break, which was never more than three minutes away.

You can keep the talk show monopoly, because its not worth having. I am no more likely to complain about the lack of liberal presence in radio talk than I am to complain about the lack of sports coverage in the supermarket tabloids. Its a wasted media, and I'll leave it to somebody else.
