We sign on to different forum sites to vent serious issues, and some
isn't serious at all. However, read this article about a Elder man who
lived alone freezing to death because of the City Administration did
not handle its business right, and this is one of the examples showing
what our elected officials are doing plus they do not give a damn about
us.

A 93-year-old man was trying to stay warm when he froze to death in his Bay City home about two weeks ago, according to the medical examiner who performed the autopsy.

A neighbor discovered the body of Marvin Schur Jan. 17, days after the local municipal power company restricted his electricity use because of an unpaid bill, according to the Associated Press.

Dr. Kanu Virani said today that Schur, who lived alone, died as a result of hypothermia, describing it as a slow, painful death. The house was cold enough, he said, that ice had formed in the kitchen sink.

“He was wearing a double layer of clothes, trying to stay warm,” Virani said.

Schur, who had no children, owed the Bay City Electric Light & Power more than $1,000 in unpaid electric bills, Bay City Manager Robert Belleman told the Associated Press today. A city utility worker had installed a device to restrict the use of electricity at Schur’s home on Jan. 13, Belleman said.

Officials with the Michigan Public Service Commission said Monday the agency does not regulate municipal utilities such as the one in Bay City. Calls to Bay City Electric Light & Power were directed to the city manager’s office, which did not return a call from the Free Press Monday.

Belleman did tell the Associated Press that the utility’s policies would be reviewed in the wake of Schur’s death, but he didn’t believe the city did anything wrong.

That's true also Back Again. However its against the Law to shut
someone's utilities off in the winter time. The law states that a utility company can not shut any household utilities of, but the customer can make an agreement to pay a certain amount each month, and a 93
year old man can't think that straight.

Another thing that I can not understand is why or where was his
caregiver (if he had one). This man lived three blocks over from
my Bay City home, and the bottomline is that the Utility company's
headquarters in in Kansas Mo.

What it looks like to me Back is Bay City hired a out of State agency
to handle the City's power, and the company shut the man power off
without approval from the City. I am on the investigating team that
will be headed to Bay City soon. This article shows the real facts, and
the Facts are the 93 year old man Rights was violated by someone
within the City Administration or the Company.

There is agencies in Bay City who do monitor Elderly People. Tell me
what was his alternatives at his age Back Again?

The article also mentioned that when his body was found, his utility bill was on the table with the money to pay it paper clipped to the bill.

Its still sad Dave that there wasn't anyone who could have been
a live-in caregiver. I will be receiving first hand information about
Mr Schur, and I am leaving for Bay City tonight to attend a City
called meeting concerning this matter in the morning (Saturday).
Monday I will be meeting with a agent from the Michigan Public
Service Commission to review Municipal guidelines concerning
shutoffs, and I do believe that someone is organizing a fund
raiser to help bury Mr Schur.

I will keep Flint Talk posted with any information concerning
the investigation, and other reports of the same matter but
maybe different locations. Dave, did you read anything about
the story in your Flint paper?

Bay City has removed the limiter-cutoff devices. Hopefully they will be banned nationwide so this never happens again.

Surprised WoW Adam we have finally agreed on something, and I
hope that this will never happen again also. However, Bay City
is facing a possible suit, and that was a slick move removing
the device. This way Bay City can shift the blame on Consumer
Energy or Bay City Electric Lights & Power.

Also the Bay County Commission has okayed a Light bill
increase, and people here in Bay City is protesting the
raise. In Detroit DTE & MichCon is catching hell from the
consumers concerning a Lights & Gas increase, but the
Detroit City Council rejected a water rate increase for the
time being, and this is why Citizens should be more aware
of the things that goes on in All government levels.
