Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban
The Ban Expired in 2004 During the Bush Administration.

SHARE The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.
Wednesday Attorney General Eric Holder said that the Obama administration will seek to reinstitute the assault weapons ban which expired in 2004 during the Bush administration.
(AP Photos/ABC News Graphic )"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.
Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.
"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum."
Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S. Mexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.
A State Department travel warning issued Feb. 20, 2009, reflected government concerns about the violence.
"Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades," the warning said. "Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico, but most recently in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez."
At the news conference today, Holder described his discussions with his Mexican counterpart about the recent spike in violence.
"I met yesterday with Attorney General Medina Mora of Mexico, and we discussed the unprecedented levels of violence his country is facing because of their enforcement efforts," he said.
Holder declined to offer any time frame for the reimplementation of the assault weapons ban, however.
"It's something, as I said, that the president talked about during the campaign," he said. "There are obviously a number of things that are -- that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so, I'm not sure exactly what the
In a brief interview with ABC News, Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association, said, "I think there are a lot of Democrats on Capitol Hill cringing at Eric Holder's comments right now."
During his confirmation hearing, Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee about
other gun control measures the Obama administration may consider.

The Assault Weapons Ban signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 banned 19 types of semi-automatic military-style guns and ammunition clips with more than 10 rounds.
"A semi-automatic is a quintessential self-defense firearm owned by American citizens in this country," LaPierre said. "I think it is clearly covered under Heller and it's clearly, I think, protected by the Constitution."

| Mexico is a major threat. If we legalized some drugs here we would increse tax revenue and about a 1000 or many thousands of people would not be getting killed over there. Our drug war is a miserable failure and it's wreaking havoc over in Mexico. |

I have said since the election that obama is a one term president and I do believe that we will see this happening starting in 2010.

I would love to see why he thinks assault rifles are so bad? I have NEVER seen a legal gun used in a crime. That includes the assault rifles that I have confiscated. Once again this will punish the law abiding citizens. The "cop killer bullets" are a joke. Even if I am wearing my vest and get shot with a rifle, chances aren't too good I would make. Just the velocity of the bullet alone would cause a huge blunt force truama. So lets hear the next lame excuse to take away the guns. This is America, for now. Our founding fore fathers would vomit if they saw how the constitution is being used.

If they are buying grenades which are illegal, I imagine there guns are illegal also. Mexico has an extreme gun policy. They charge each bullet as a gun. It sure has helped them reduce violence. Here is an idea, build a fence and enforce it with lethal force. There is nothing like having a sidewalk for the terrioists to come into america. We wouldn't have to worry about the violence then. I also imagine that corruption has alot to do with there crime problems.

I agree with you on the drug war. This is a war we will never win. I say legalize it and tax the hell out of it. Do you remember on how many deaths there were when prohibition was in effect? How many homicides are there now that it is legal? The same thing would happen if some of the drugs were legal. Why buy it off the street when you could go to Rite Aid. |

This is only, at this time is applicable to DC because it is NOT a state...but I am sure that the NRA is working on the applicability to the states....
WTH!! Why do people need an assault rifle anyway? Yeah, they're for hunting, yeah, yeah....tracking deer has a whole new meaning..look for the antler there, look for the hoof over there, the tail over there....
Okay..now I've said my "piece"...let the "firing" begin....but I will bite the "bullet" and say, I am not against people owning guns.... |

| Why should twotap have that nice Nova, or any nice car for that matter. Isn't a Chevy Cobolt enough? The government should have no say in what we can own. Some people enjoy shooting as a hobby, just as I imagine Twotap enjoys cars. They shouldn't have to justify there right to no one. Its there right to own an assault rifle and if they chose to exercise it, good for them. |

| By the way if someone did choose to use a 223 assault rifle to deer hunt with they would be limited by law to a 5 round magazine like any other semi auto. And the 223 round its not really all that powerful compared to most deer cartridges better suited to woodchucks. Once again more media hype. |
