Flint, Michigan 2008 Population: 428,790 2007-2008 Change: -1.2% 2000-2007 Change: -0.3% Flint was first affected by a downsized auto industry during the 1980s and 1990s, when General Motors laid off thousands of workers in the area. Today, the unemployment rate is 12.3%, and the metro area saw a 30.6% decrease in manufacturing jobs over the last year.
