Topic: City of Flint Budget Hearings

I'm a bit confused.

I've sat at nearly all of the budget hearings that have been held so far and have watched the show that is being put on by a couple of the Councilpeople.

All of the sudden they are concerned about Public Safety. Outraged at the fact that the City is laying off Police and Fire.

Well, where the hell have they been for the last 2 years. Where was the outrage last year when there were $14,000,000.00 in so-called Emergency Purchases? Where was the outrage when the Mayor had nearly 30 appointees? Where was the outrage when they were voting to buy garbage trucks from higher bidder outside of the City?

The list of outrageous items is long. And yet, we heard not a peep.

I just don't get it.

I hope that people realize that the Council Folks that are screaming the loudest this year (even accusing the Mayor of murder for closing a fire station) are the same Council Folks that sat by and allowed this mess to happen.

I have been outraged for years that the community policing millage has not been used as intended.

This is a blatant misuse of millage funding.

Top cops did not feel this program was worthwhile but still asked voters to support the program. Rather than ask for a regular policing millage.

Voters were not asked for funds for regular policing voters supported COMMUNITY POLICING. So we want community policing done.

We want our new city council reps to fight to make this happen under a new mayor.

Yes, I was outraged the mayor had 30 appointees, but Boss Hogg is gone.
So how will this ongoing issue be addressed NOW?

Anyone else find it interesting that Mike Brown gets a free pass on everything?
John Carpenter demoted because he refused to agree to transfer grant money he obtained for demolition to the general fund, & not a peep from any of the media. Arnold Brown, the head of waste collection transferred to parks & Rec. and replaced by someone with no experience at all. Nancy Jurckiewicz replaced as head of major grants with someone that has NO grant writing experience.
And not a peep from anyone.

It's all going to change in another two months anyway... The positive thing is that the Mayor has been able to cut significant dollars from the budget that will help to reduce the number of layoffs in police and fire....

There was once a transportation director. Now, there's the transportation director, AND the infrastructure director. Two people being paid to do what one did in the past. That really lowers the budget, doesn't it? I've also heard we may lose some major grant money because the new head of major grants may not be able to get the proper paperwork filled out correctly and in time. That should save a bundle, too.

People screamed bloody murder at almost everything Williamson did, but with this bunch, there's dead silence. WHY?

I don't believe that the Transportation Director is making the same level of salary that he was before... though I could be wrong.

People were upset with Williamson because he was spending money like a drunken sailor.... this "bunch" is actually lowering expenditures....

Monday should be interesting... the Council is set to adopt a budget... After attending most of the hearings and listening to everything that the Council wants to fund... I wonder where they are going to come up with all of the money.... It's easy to say you are going to fund something, but none of them want to cut in order to fund it......

Also heard last night that revenue could be down an additional $1.1 million because of the reduction in State-shared Revenue of $633,000.00 and the expected drop in income tax with the shops being down for an extended period (around $500,000) which means even mroe cuts.

It's going to be messy...
