Flint, Michigan
(Longest Road to Recovery)
"GDP at start of recession: $10.96 billion
End of 2010: $9.25 billion (-15.6%, projected)
Unemployment: 14.2%
Median home/median salary ratio: 1.5
Nowhere has been hurt by the recession more than Flint. Once an automotive center, the city's economy is projected to shrink by a Depression-like -15.6% from the start of the recession to the end of 2010. (A 10% decline of GDP is sometimes cited as a rule of thumb for depression.) Moody's estimates that Flint will not recover to its pre-recession size in the next decade."

The analysis also shows the importance of a city's economic make-up. Manufacturing has been battered by the recession, leaving cities like Detroit and Flint, Mich., or Youngstown, Ohio, with bad unemployment and a changing economy that's unlikely to replace the lost jobs. Moody's projects the economy in Flint, for example, will decrease by 16% from the start of recession to the end of 2010. (One commonly cited rule of thumb for depression is a decline of 10%.) Flint might never return to its original size. |

What better place to test Obama's solution to problems. Drop a couple billion on Flint, sit back & see what happens. |

Abandoned houses - if they're structurally sound, give it to a person. They would have 2 years to bring it up to code & pass all inspections. Then, they must live in that house. If they rent it out, it would revert back and be given to someone else.
Business & jobs Flint & Michigan are much too restrictive. Encourage businesses to locate here rather than discourage them. Present regulations, procedures & taxes make it almost impossible for a new business to locate in Flint.
Crime - Transportation director John carpenter was shunted aside and his job divided among 3 people, including him. His office is now at the 12th street garage. He is still receiving his full pay, as are the 2 people Mike Brown put in place. So, there are now 3 people, doing what was one job, receiving 80K salaries. That extra 160K could bring back 2 officers. How much more of this is going on?
Government efficiency - Arnold Brown was the head of waste collection for several years, and did an excellent job. he was always accessible, and worked with citizens. he has been transferred to parks & rec., and replaced with someone who has admitted he's in way over his head. The head of major grants, Nancy Jurkewich removed & replaced with someone with NO grant writing experience. WTF? |
