Detroit Parents Demand Jail Time for Teachers Over Low Test Scores
Monday, December 14, 2009
Parents in Detroit are demanding jail time for teachers after the release of a report showing fourth and eigth-grade students with the lowest math scores in the nation, MyFoxDetroit reported Monday.
Sharlonda Buckman of the Detroit Parent Network is reportedly pushing for prison time and civil lawsuits against teachers and officials in the school district who are not doing enough to educate the city's youth.
Detroit students took the National Assessment of Educational Progress test in 2009; 69 percent of fourth-graders scored below the basic level in math, while 77 percent of eighth-graders scored below average, according to the station.
Buckman and others are now calling for educators to be held accountable for the abysmal scores.
"Somebody needs to go to jail,"
she said in an address to several hundred parents at the organization's annual breakfast forum on Saturday, according to the Detroit News. "Somebody needs to pay for this. Somebody needs to go to jail, and it shouldn't be the kids." |
