It saddens me to tell all of you that former Flint Mayor James Rutherford has passed away. I was fortunate to be able to get to know Mr. Rutherford on a personal level working over the past 10 years on Flint City issues. Mr. Rutherford had a passion for this city and its history.

Rutherford was an important part of Flnt's history, both as a Police Chief and as a Mayor. |

Who was the police chief that allegedly had some "racial tensions"? |

Rutherfors was chief during the racial tensons. It was a sign of the times and had nothing to do with him. He personally worked with the prosecutor, and "Sokita" Nolden to help quell the unrest. He was on a radio show about 1997 telling about his role and the role of others.
He was an honorable man with a big heart and a genuine love for Flint. |

to my knowledge mr.rutherford was never instigated in any "racial" problems. as a matter of fact, back in those turbulent times he was THE MAN to contact to resolve an issue. i personally remember during the riots of 1968 or 69 there was a line of police in riot gear in front of summerfield chevrolet (oak business center) and on the opposing side were a fairly large group of young to middle aged black men. both groups were primed for action. here comes rutherford, calmingly walks up to the group and talks to the leaders.
within 15 minutes everyone simply walked away. the guy was blessed with a cool demeanor and could talk sense into anyone. the folks who actually knew him know what i'm talking about. he was the right man for the season.
guys like that are a rare commodity indeed! |

well, first of all, the two fellow students and i who were just driving around to see what if anything was going on were doing just that. driving around like kids do.
amazingly, we had no alterior motives
!! surprised that black kids just ride around like kids from other races???
now, as to the group of young men walking down north saginaw street, it just happens they were walking by summerfields when we spotted them!!!
they did not, i repeat do anything to summerfields!!!!!
got it??
we stopped a safe distance away to see what was going on. during those times i think it was prudent for the police to expect anything ( i know i would have). there was a line of police in full riot gear about 50 yards away from them on n.saginaw. cheif (don't quite recall if he was police chief or mayor then) rutherford convinced everyone to allow cooler heads to prevail.
thats all there was.no pre-planned attack on summerfields.
just a group of pissed individuals during a tough time in american history.
you do have quite the imaginative thought process. |

Was the Colonel's Drive-In across from Summerfield's at that time? It used to be a real hang-out. |

The Colonels was on leith & Saginaw, about 3 or 4 blocks North of Summerfields. It's now the Riviera Party Store. |
