Dear neighbors,

We have been hearing of numerous break-ins in our neighborhood and in other Flint neighborhoods. In the past, the perpetrators usually have been found by police detectives, and the crime sprees ended. Lately, however, break-ins seem to be escalating. What bothers me most is that the thieves seem to be targeting vulnerable, elderly people.

In the heart of our neighborhood last week, an 85-year-old neighbor who has lived here for more than 40 years was assaulted in her own home at midnight. A man kicked in her steel door – although she has an alarm system and a dog – knocked her down and took her purse. She is bruised, but otherwise physically all right. But now she and her family are living in fear. Is this what we want for our neighborhood?

It is wonderful that Mott Community College Safety Department assists the Flint Police by patrolling the mile-diameter neighborhoods around its campus. They are responsive and professional. But it is not enough to stop the crime.

The Flint Journal ran an article on Thursday Feb.11 headlined “Walling brings up ‘L’ word amid talks with police, firefighters.” http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2010/02/mayor_police_chief_will_talk_a.html

Sunday’s Flint Journal printed numerous readers comments about the issue (A-6, Feb. 14, 2010).

We have serious budget issues in the city, but laying off police and firefighters seems like a pretty bad idea when there are other areas that could be trimmed. Interestingly, the Mayor’s Neighborhood Action Sessions have found that safety is the top concern in all 9 wards of the city.

If this bothers you, then please, now is the time to act. Please email, send a letter or call Mayor Walling and Councilman Weighill. They need to hear from each of us, the people who are keeping this city together. They need to hear what we want.

Here are the contacts:

Mayor Dayne Walling

(810) 766-7346

You can send an email to the website at:

Be sure to identify that it is addressed to the Mayor

Councilman Dale Weighill

1101 S. Saginaw Street, Flint, Michigan 48502

(810) 766-7418, ext. 3163

email: DWeighill@cityofflint.com

If you wish, please send a copy of your email so your neighbors can share it at: ccnaflint@yahoogroups.com

And if you wish to join the yahoo group, please send an email to Cathy Lancaster at: clancaster_fpl@yahoo.com. She will send you an evite to join.

Thank you for doing what you can to make our neighborhood and all of Flint a great place to live and work.

Did you by chance check with the city clerk to see if there's been an amendment to this ordinance since the ones posted online (through 4-25-05) at http://www.amlegal.com/library/mi/flint.shtml?

Really mole? You get an email about how we should be proactive and you use it to start one of your famous pity parties? I know people in davison who have had their WHOLE STREET BROKEN INTO! Its not just flint despite what you pessimists want to believe. Stop your whining and do something, and if you are working hard, as I know many of you are, than devote your time to that, not constant whining.

2005 is when the codes were upgraded. I went through the agendas since 2005 and found no amendments. Williamson did not have acommunications director, only Brown and Walling.

how much money would be saved by releasing non essential employees from the mayors crew and all other departments excluding police and fire?

don't we have a "forestry dept"? what do they do?

did the city actually make money running it's own impound lot? Shocked

(sorry dave i changed my question a little)

Assuming they make 80K each & police officers make 40K, 4.

I know lots of city workers who could be replaced or eliminated.
