Rumor floatting around the city is that Walling is preparing to cut 20 more officers from our ranks.

Can Mole or anyone confirm or deny?

That should leave just enough on each shift to guard Walling.
Will we see the superduper chief patrolling the streets?

If he cuts more the city will collapse. The department is not capable of handling the call volume efficiently at current staffing levels. Cut more and it will be impossible to keep up.

How about "Building and Strengthening Flint's Community Policing and Their Partnership in the Community" by hiring sufficient officers to make community policing viable?

Gee....the contact number for the session is a Lansing number. Go figure. That's part of Walling's problem. This isn't Lansing. This is Flint. Different socio-economic environment, different crime levels, and different attitudes.

Sounds like the focus group bunch from Lansing that had a "crime prevention" meeting at Salem Housing recently. It was so well advertised that 10 people showed up. People that attended told me it was a waste of their time, something along the lines of the neighborhood inaction sessions.

The focus groups are being set up by Michigan State University. I believe they were to be in place before the foot patrol started.

According to MSU the foot patrol is not in place yet. This was a surprise because I thought they were in place sometime in mid march.

Walling is supposed to reveal the plan for foot patrols etc.

Looks like 10 officers lost

FLINT (WJRT) -- (05/06/10)--After losing nearly 50 Flint Police officers in late March, 10 more could be on their way out, too, if the mayor's proposed police department budget goes into effect as is.

Budget hearings are underway department by department. Council members questioned police department officials Wednesday.

One of the things that came up? A towing contract.

It was last October the city-run Flint police impound lot closed -- a business that in its best, recent years made the city more than $950,000.

The contract for towing, storage and auctions was awarded to Complete Towing. At the time, Mayor Dayne Walling said the city wanted out of the impound business.

"There were all kinds of hidden costs," Walling said.

But according to invoices obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, the police department is paying out thousands of dollars a month to Complete Towing.

Just in towing and storage and just for the first three months, Complete Towing billed the police department near $60,000.

Keith Speer, president of the Flint Police Officer's Association, has been vocal about this topic.

"No one has been able to show those hidden costs," he said.

"There's no reason we shouldn't handle it, but they'd rather pay a friend, a political ally an exorbitant amount of money."

The mayor said the city should still see a nearly $100,000 profit this year under this contract. And there will always be a profit because of the way the contract is written.

Walling says projections showed the lot in the long run -- if city run -- would lose money because of declining revenues and rising expenses.

Some still don't buy that and say the money the lot could make is money badly needed for the police department right now.
