The Road to Freedom program helps recently released prisoners with counseling, jobs and homes. However, they obviously do little or no screening of some of these individuals before they place them in residential neighborhoods.

A prime example is the placement of a resident in a home on Seminole near Welch. Seminole is a short 3 block street running from Welch, 2 blocks east of Dupont, to Copeman. A HUD home at 1637 Seminole was purchased and renovated for the program.

Neighboring residents are upset that since the new occupant has moved in there has been loud parties and rowdy behavior. Allegations include a nude woman parading in front of open windows and sex acts involving numerous individuals. When a representative went to Road to freedom to complain, they were told the individual had the right to have sleepovers and he had numerous friends. After that meeting the occupant of 1637 Seminole demonstrated behaviors that frightened some neighbors and had them locking doors and setting alarms.

This resident also blocked the community garden on the Land Bank lot next door. He advised neighbors that while they could plant a garden, he would not quarantee the garden would remain and he would allow his children to play on the garden area.

The recorded owner of the property is Amber Miller of Grand blanc. And while Miller is a common name, Steve Miller is the name of the President of the board for Road to Freedom.

Add the new half way house at 1645 Seminole, a home recorded as belonging to Tredale Kennedy, and the street has become a nightmare to some. The home on the corner of Welch and seminole is said to be in the process of being purchased from HUD as a half way house.

Those who can move are planning to and some have moved. The new developments and gang activity has had the owner of one home on Welch just walking away. One retired LEO in the area is leaving as he does not want to be around those he helped incarcerate. An elderly gentleman has asked his family to return his gun. When Watchdog security came through some months ago, many bought security systems. Unfortunately, some residents are unable to leave.

The federal 990's do not match the state corporation reporting forms. Founded in 2000, the state forms for the yrs 2006 to 2008 were filled out in 2008. Ther is no 2009. The state records show a name change in 2006 from Operation Rebound to Road to Freedom.

The 2007 and 2008 forms for the Irs were both filed in April of 2009. nothingmore recent. It was originally organized for Youth Development Programs, but now shows their purpose as temporary housing and spiritual guidance. For both years the organization claims services for 35 individuals, ages 18 to 45.

During that time they moved from 120 West First Ave to 119 N. Gd Traverse.

The revenues are low , $11,593 to $15,183. Gerald Parker of 5140 Spinning Wheel, Grand blanc is a trustee for both year and Shan A Heath (Treasurer) of 1905 Rockcreek, Flint, 48507 is shown for 2008.

Other Board members are Toni Wright (no address) and Lewis Garret of 1724 Franklin.

I really believe that the unrealistic rules put in place when Civic park was made a historical district contributed to it's demise. People just couldn't afford to do what was required, so they just walked away. I can see the same thing happening on Seminole. people will just walk away. Interesting that it's part of the proposed Metawaneenee Hills historical district, but none of the people pushing that seem the least bit concerned.
