FLINT, Michigan — Thirteen men who authorities claimed belonged to a gang called the Dayton Mafia face federal drug and gun charges.
Raids on multiple homes in Flint and the Mt. Morris area last month resulted in the seizure of 14 guns, 324 marijuana plants, 704 grams of heroin, 314 grams of crack and 3,400 grams of powder cocaine, according the Genesee County Safe Streets Task Force, a joint effort between the sheriff’s department, Flint police, state police and the FBI.
“These are the cases that make the major impact on violent crime in Flint,” said Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.
Seven of the men — Lamonte Watson Jr., 34; Isaac D. Meeks, 42; Shawn Smith, 35; Hansel D. Williams, 49; Terrance Alexander, 40; Vourice Meeks, 28; and Duane Williams, 35 — have been arraigned on the charges, which include conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. All seven have pled not guilty and are being held in the Genesee County Jail.
The other six men named in the indictment have not been arraigned yet.
An attorney for Alexander disputed claims about his client belonging to an organized crime group.
“It may catch a headline in a newspaper but it’s not accurate,” said attorney Matthew Norwood, who represents Terrance Alexander, 40 in the case.
Alexander “flatly refutes” the charges, said Norwood.
“He’s a responsible adult who owns his own business, who takes care of his family,” said Norwood. “He’s not a gangbanger, he’s never been associated with gangbangers.”
Attorneys for the other men who have been arraigned either declined comment or could not be reached.
Pickell said the arrests mark the end of a months-long investigation conducted by the Safe Streets Task Force and FBI Supervisory Senior Resident Agent John Cecil called the Dayton Mafia one of the more prominent gangs in Flint.
“The Dayton Mafia seems to be a little bit older, more streetwise, more discreet in the way they did this,” said Pickell, calling its alleged members “profiteers.”

Yeah right, attorneys who believe their clients are as stupid as those who judge guilt and innocence without evidence. Those attorneys who make comments outside of court show a great deal of contempt for our justice system and the judges who permit such conduct are just as contemptible. This always puzzles me as to how these people manage to retain their membership in the bar.
Juries and judges are required to make their decisions based upon the facts. Attorneys should also! A competent attorney should be able to represent their client without making a judgment as to their guilt or innocence.

No I know they are not the same. But rappers are often associated with and members of gangs. Backstabber already did federal prison time, so he is not an innocent. By glorifying the activities of the "infamous" Dayton Avenue and advocating murder and violence, one has to consider the influence they are promoting .
The residents in this area refer to the hoodlums who terrorize their neighborhood as Dayton Avenue. These young ones are doing the shooting and committing other crimes. For the administration to tell residents they are safer is absurd. The violence did not decline, as predicted, with the capture and indictments of the Dayton Mafia, instead it almost accelerated.
There can be any number of gang sets in a specifired area and many can fly under the same flag. |

I hear residents talk about Dayton Avenue, a name associated with the rap group, and they tend to lump many groups under that name. I see groups tag under both the name associated with their set and Dayton Avenue. Black gangs tend to tag with their favorite artists and their hit songs. Look behind the stores at mackin and Chevrolet and you will see the Weatherman. Both the East side an Chevrolet near Welch had the Hot Boyz. The list goes on.
I am more familiar with the East side. The Latino gangs such as the ISCN had the most artistic grafitti. Back years ago, the gangs used to identify the author of the grafitti. Some styles were so unique, that you knew as soon as you saw it who the artist was. For example the magnificent and almost dragon like Cobras of Juicy. East Side Crips, Vernon Avenue Crips and others also had some artistic bent .
Most of the grafitti in the north end is crude in comparison. They still sometimes have rosters, which has gotten rare in oher areas. The Skull gang, whose tags are on Garfield, is unusual in that many of their skulls look like those on some commercial t shirts and are very well done. Most of the north end grafitti is tied into the names and themes of the rap artists
The efforts of the community have kept much of the grafitti down. It was surprising to see East Side Crip grafitti and ISC in Metawanenee. Violence increased then and discontinued for a short time after its removal. Cobra tags have been in the northwest along Clio Rd and even Mackin for years.
It is always interesting when rival gangs from other communities show up. several years ago some Latin Kings hit Flint, and tagged several areas and several ended up in our jail. One area in the south side went from Vice Lord to a mixture of gangs. Another went from GD to Blood in a short time.
One unique feature of the north end was the huge memorials wall murals, dedicated to the entire community, and not just fallen street soldiers, that were quite strking . It was sad to see them removed.
